    Pros

Pay not too bad. People within the project group are nice in general. Don't need to work like a slave like in some other company.

    Cons

Management internal politics. Managers lack managerial skills, not to mention technical skills. Inefficient and ineffective cooperation between project groups (vendor and customer relationship) as there was no mutual trust. Good lead engineers left because of unsupportive work environment. In the end, project got canned and organization got reshuffled, managers replaced. In one instance, a manager from France who took over group was a total idiot, dismissed a good engineer, and eventually led the collapse of the whole group. Of course, after the damage is done, she returned home.

    Advice to Management

Go for management training and learn how to deal with people and peers appropriately. Know who are your gems in your staff and communicate more often.

I have been working at STMicroelectronics full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

People are easy going and not much work pressure , typical European culture.

    Cons

Lot of French and Italian politics around you and you would invariably be a victim of their favoritism .US centers are considered as an overhead and never given their due importance . Management locally is sluggish and spineless with no say in company's decisions . Overall not the best place to work if you want to have a bright career . Just about ok if you want to hang in there with an attitude of old time government employee .

    Advice to Management

I don't think Management needs an advice as they anyways have nothing in their hands , the best they do is hire people locally . All the decisions are taken from Europe .

I worked at STMicroelectronics full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

For someone outside of Europe, a fantastic place for multi-cultural experience, particularly for business owners wanting experience dealing with international organizations.
The guys in Grenoble lot better than rest of the Europe.
If the BUs put their determination behind something, wonders can happen. eg., MEMs, power mgmt, etc.

    Cons

The Director level mgmt needs a forklift change. Most have scant idea how to run/grow a business.
The leadership has no idea how to create a strategy to run a huge org; once in a while a hit comes along to save grace.
Huge dependence at all levels on who you know to get the job done. There are hardly any processes to run a multi-segment businesses.

    Advice to Management

To succeed, stop laying off US employees & remove the guarantees of lifelong-jobs in Europe. Start instilling high-performing leadership in key BUs to demonstrate performance based success.
Reward based on performance metrics as opposed to seniority & who you know.
Ask INSEAD to do a case study on why TI which was at the same position as STM has been able to do so successfully & implement the recommendations.

    Pros

Wide variety of work. Supported professional activities.

    Cons

Now it's dominated by cost cutting and politics.

    Advice to Management

Chasing off your best people is not a good long term strategy.

I have been working at STMicroelectronics full-time

    Pros

Can't think of any. I tried long and hard to come up with any positives about working for ST, but other than receiving a paycheck, I can't think of any.

    Cons

Stagnant wages, poor management from top down, lack of concern for employees. Little to no regard for how the actions of management effect the lives of the people in the company.

    Pros

Some very nice people still working at this company.

    Cons

Corruption from CEO to VPs, mismanagement, illegal business activities.
They lay off american employees and bring people from Europe.

    Advice to Management

    Replace the entire management.

    Pros

Good culture. Understanding of time off with family, good benefits and salary. Decent bonuses, sometimes.

    Cons

Lousy raises for the past several years. Few stock grants available. Multiple changes in senior level management and organisations with no cognisance of the devastating effects said changes will add to design in terms of risk, cycle time, and general errors have virtually guaranteed an environment where poor quality will be the norm.

Promotions based more upon politics and schmoozing than on technical competence and management ability, and the results of this are showing, will only get worse with odd reorganizations underway.

    Advice to Management

Incorporate more technical people into management positions, and/or a structure where designers' voices and concerns are heard. Place has really gone downhill these past few years, with lots of highly skilled people now looking for the exits.

    Pros

Very less and simple work, even non-technical persons can also do the technical work at ST. Safe haven for inefficient managers and engineers for longer stay. Less availability of good vlsi engineers in New Delhi area therefore there is job security.

    Cons

Most of the immediate supervisors/managers are inefficient therefore they always support their inefficient team members for their own job security and growth.
Mostly promotions and good salary hike are given to least performer and inefficient employees causing best performer to leave the company.
Knowledge of dirty politics is required for better growth and job security.
Not recommended to work for more than 4 years else he/she will become jack of all trades and master of none.

    Advice to Management

The senior management should replace 95% of middle management.
The team members should do appraisal to their immediate supervisor.
