  1. "Great company, friendly work-environment"

I have been working at STP as a contractor

    Pros

Nice and friendly team members, easy process setups, opportunity to learn a lot. Company also seems to stay on top of technological developments in the industry.

    Cons

Pay could be better, but since STP is the 3rd link in the "food-chain", being (sort of) an SLV, they need to stay competitive, and prices have been forced down for years.

    Advice to Management

Consider expanding with more languages as well as more locations and move up to the 2nd link of the foodchain. With the well-structured setup you have, the talent, processes, technology and work culture, you have the ability to grow further and compete with much larger companies.

    Pros

Very patient and experienced upper leadership. They recognize talent and respect your personal inclinations and wishes for personal development.

    Cons

Sometimes the right kind of specialist competence is nowhere to be fund. This is not unique to this company though. There is really nothing negative to say except that salaries could be a bit higher.

    Advice to Management

    Keep at it!

I have been working at STP full-time

    Pros

Lovely people and a warm, welcoming atmosphere in the office. Good team structure now in place with clear procedures for reporting and review. Job security. A high level of flexibility with possibilities of flexi-time and remote working for all employees. On-the-job CAT-tool training and a strong focus on technology sets staff and the company apart from many others in the translation industry. Company culture and values lean towards a healthy work-life balance, reflecting the Nordic background of many senior managers and staff. Very positive changes introduced in recent months, including staff satisfaction survey and steering committee, communications manager, social budget per office/team.

    Cons

Some of the senior management can have unrealistic expectations of staff, based on their experience of STP as a much smaller company. Internal communications based around email are difficult to manage. Lack of performance-related rewards. Few opportunities for upward promotion due to company structure and salary limitations.

    Advice to Management

Senior management should check in regularly with their employees, especially the team managers, to make sure they have a good understanding of current trends in the day-to-day working environment.

I have been working at STP full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

A solid, sensible company with a strong sense of job security and room to develop in your role. Initiative and hard work is rewarded with added responsiblity and variety in tasks. The management approach is friendly and never forceful.

    Cons

The rapid growth of the company and the fact that it's spread over three offices in two countries makes it difficult to keep personal contact with all employees. But within the individual teams there is a good sense of community.

    Pros

Flexible working hours and opportunities for home office, nice people, access to most translation tools including tutorials. Good project management system. Very little micromanagment. Good location of London office.

    Cons

Managing Director seems out of touch with the actual work processes in the various teams, likes to talk but not to listen. Management didn't seem to see employee strengths and weaknesses and had quite a few misconceptions. Pay is okay, but you can work very little/not do well and make the same as someone who's making big coins for the company. Company philosophy seems to be quantity over quality and they employ mostly young and unexperienced people instead of investing in staff with solid work experience.

    Advice to Management

Invest in and appreciate talented employees that want to advance. Get to know the work processes in the different teams. Do more to create team spirit e.g evenings out in each location rather than a yearly company trip.

    Pros

Pension scheme, flexible work hours, decent pay.

    Cons

    Advice to Management

Decide whether quality or quantity matters the most.

    Advice to Management

Try to keep STP spirit alive.

    I worked at STP full-time

    Pros

    - Informal work atmosphere.
    - Management looks after employees' needs - also beyond the work place for new employees just joining from abroad who need assistance settling in the UK.
    - Fair pay.
    - Good office facilities.

    Cons

    - Limited scope for advancement.
    - Translators on the "factory floor" not always shown much appreciation and often asked to do overtime/weekend work.
    - The office is "in the middle of nowhere". Not ideal for potential employees looking to move to the UK. A Southampton city centre location would make this company far more desirable to work for.
    - The rate offered to the company's freelance suppliers is on the low side.

    Advice to Management

Show a little more employee appreciation and offer freelance suppliers higher pay. Consider moving the office to a more accessible/desirable location.
