I have been working at STUDIOS Architecture full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The office tends to attract high- profile, and therefore generally high- design oriented clients - great work if you are lucky enough to work on it. The office does a wide variety of project types and scales so in theory there is the ability to work on a diverse array of projects. Compensation is probably the best in the area. Yearly raises and bonuses are generally fairly generous. The other benefits are fairly...

    Cons

Although promoting a collaborative environment, the reality is the design on the majority of the projects are dictated by a select few favorites and the remainder of the staff, regardless of position are expected to silently execute the work. The firm tends to pigeon-hole staff into isolated project roles / project typologies and it can be difficult to break out of those silos. Project staffing has little to do with...

    Advice to Management

Loosen the reins and give your staff the opportunity to learn by doing. Practice what you preach.

I have been working at STUDIOS Architecture full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great office atmosphere. Great group of people to work with. Great projects. Great design process, which they are good about involving everyone in.

    Cons

Pay is ok, however is still below average. Tend to hire people to fill roles, rather than promoting people from within. Could be better at trusting people and building confidence. Easy to get pigeon-holed into a role, and it can be very difficult to get out of it. Not good at listening to people. Not good at taking action to resolve situations, takes a very long time for management to resolve anything. They have a...

I worked at STUDIOS Architecture full-time

      Pros

-(most) people are friendly -easy to gain CA experience -opportunity to work independently at junior and associate levels -(NYC) great IT support -good benefits

      Cons

-lack of project diversity / template design process, corporate -lack of staff diversity -lack of program fluidity -lack of project standards leaves lower and middle level staff having to adjust to each PM/project’s standards, which can be arbitrary and/or outdated -complacency among many of the APs -unsystematic staffing -high turnover

      Advice to Management

Make the effort to understand why turnover is so high, retention alone is misleading when many of the APs have been at the company for considerable amounts of time. There are many untapped pools of talent in the office, take the time to learn what people's strengths and weaknesses are. Staff shouldn't feel punished or pigeon holed into a role for doing it well, account for their ambitions/growth. Expand project...

      - Dedicated, talented group of creative individuals - Better than average work/life balance - Very respectful and professional environment - Great benefits, particularly healthcare

I worked at STUDIOS Architecture full-time

      Pros

      - Professional, respectful staff and leadership - Better than average work/life balance (if you don't have deadlines) - High standard of design - Good healthcare package

      Cons

      - Hard to get noticed if you don't "fit in" - Unclear how to get promoted if you're at a junior level - The work can get repetitive if you're pigeon-holed into certain project types - Doesn't seem like a good place to start your career because there aren't clear cut standards of how things should be done

      Advice to Management

Invest more energy in developing your junior staff so they have a chance to shine.
