I worked at STUDIOS Architecture full-time

    Pros

    - Professional, respectful staff and leadership
    - Better than average work/life balance (if you don't have deadlines)
    - High standard of design
    - Good healthcare package

    Cons

    - Hard to get noticed if you don't "fit in"
    - Unclear how to get promoted if you're at a junior level
    - The work can get repetitive if you're pigeon-holed into certain project types
    - Doesn't seem like a good place to start your career because there aren't clear cut standards of how things should be done

    Advice to Management

Invest more energy in developing your junior staff so they have a chance to shine.

I worked at STUDIOS Architecture full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Project quality was very hit or miss, though I was involved in several ambitious and design-forward projects at the New York office. There was often an interest in creating quality architecture, though only on select projects.

    Cons

In my time there the office was extremely political, with benefits and opportunities often unrelated to performance and ability—the opposite of an egalitarian workplace. Project credit was also assigned very selectively with key employees often going unacknowledged. There was little interest in fostering learning, creativity, and a friendly office culture.

    Advice to Management

Be approachable, be fair, and be appreciative.

I worked at STUDIOS Architecture full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Reputable clients w/ no budgets. Decent benefits package is all that they can offer. Enthusiastic staff without a clue about where they are going.

    Cons

Generic name w/ zero charisma people = generic product. They only care about turning a profit on every project. Huge communication problems throughout w/ junior level staff are lost entirely. Avoid

    Advice to Management

    Wake up, you are lost

I have been working at STUDIOS Architecture full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Collaborative work environment, great talent, good energy, nice people, good overall vibe in the office.

    Cons

Office is terribly disorganized. Time and resources are wasted and mismanaged. Talent retention does not seem to be important to them. Many employees are over worked and overloaded, and management doesn't seem to notice. It's also very hard to get promoted. There's no clear path to how to get there... Though I've heard if you find another job opportunity, they'll likely promote you. What a shame. It's very hard to get noticed as the principals and associate principals take credit for most of the credit on the projects.

    Advice to Management

Take a look at the culture and how it's changed. STUDIOS used to be a great place to work.

No direct mentor. You get lost sometimes. Cut people as they please.

I worked at STUDIOS Architecture full-time

    Pros

Young office with an overall good vibe. Lots of opportunity to gain responsibility quickly. Great projects, most of them interiors or lobby repositioning. At the lower level, office politics is pretty good compared to larger offices. The principal I worked with was awesome.

    Cons

Work life balance, not so great benefits package, higher level politics. Quite a bit of turnover, though this is similar in many firms in the city.

    Advice to Management

Keep giving responsibility to young, capable staff. Give opportunities to grow and advance to more of the staff - some people seem to get these, and some don't.
