I have been working at SUMMIT Electric Supply full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Great people. Fun place to work. They are invested in employees and set you up for success via initial and ongoing training. Health insurance coverage & accruing paid vacation starts only 90 days after hire date, much sooner than some other jobs I have had. Relaxed and fun work environment - can wear jeans to work everyday!

    Cons

As an inside sales person - having to work the counter one Saturday every 6 weeks isn't fun, but it's only a short 4 hour shift in the morning so it's not really too bad. You also have to have the emergency pager and be on-call 24/7 for one full week about once every 2 - 3 months. Both rotate between a lot of people so working Saturday's & having the emergency pager do not happen to you that often and aren't that bad - was hard to think of cons of working here!

I worked at SUMMIT Electric Supply full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great pay for Albuquerque market (at least in IT career field). Great opportunities for getting hands on latest technologies. IT department has no problem spending money on "toys" and the IT director is top notch who always supports and goes to bat for the staff. Promotes a work hard, play hard work environment and was overall a fun place to work.

    Cons

Lacks formal policies across the board on just about everything but appears to be trying to move in the right direction. Know the employee handbook and be able to reference it if need be. Corporate benefits are below average. They structure personal time and vacation time benefits in such a way that the employee can never really talk full advantage of their accrued time. After hitting a certain threshold, time starts going into a different bucket called extended leave where the employees can never really touch it unless a catastrophic life event has happened. There is no 401K match but rather a discretionary match if the senior executives approve of it. All the VPs in the company are provided a leased BMW which doesn't sit well with many employees when raises and bonuses are minimal or non-existent. Being a true privately owned company, it's obvious "the good ole' boy system" is alive and well at Summit. Be careful of ever going against the grain and check your six at all times. The senior level decisions are very knee jerk and overall the company is very reactionary rather than proactive on just about everything. Also, the hiring process includes a personality evaluation and the Wonderlic test but the senior management eventually hires whoever they want to even when applicants fail the tests. Lastly never give anything more than a two week notice if you intend on resigning, and in fact I would recommend depleting all vacation time possible and quit the day of because they only pay out 50% of banked vacation time and employees lose all accrued personal time when they leave and Summit has been known to release employees before the employee can complete their two week notice.
