I have been working at Saab Group full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great and friendly coworkers who are willing to help out with any issues you might have.

    Cons

No training.. zero management involvement- fairly non-existent.. lots of new [and very lost] hires ..good thing coworkers are so helpful because the SOPs are terribly outdated and that's all you have to train from.

    Advice to Management

Get a formal onboarding process that involves basic system training and have dedicated trainers .. its chaotic the first couple months just trying to figure out what your job function actually is.

I worked at Saab Group (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Pay and benefits are great.

    Cons

Serious hiring discrimination for engineering positions. This company actively throws out female and minority applicants due to gender and skin color. Do nothing, under-experienced management and toxic, good ol' boys environment. Needs to be investigated by the EEOC immediately.

    Advice to Management

If you want to bring this company into the future, stop living in the past.

Highly competitive salary and decent benefits. Up to 4.5% (50% of 9%) 401k matching plus up to 5% 1-for-1 share matching (3yr to mature) making up to 9.5% total benefit. Beating most US defense and aerospace company.

    Thin on R&D spending.
Syracuse site has very snowy winters (a plus if skiing is your thing)

    Advice to Management

I have been working at Saab Group full-time

    Pros

The company is growing at an impressive rate, and the on-boarding process is finally starting to take shape. It has excellent benefits and great job security. You are not removed from the company simply due to a lull between contract periods. There is likewise excellent documentation within their hardware and software. This typically makes interpreting software implementations a very simple process. Software engineers are similarly brought on and immediately introduced to

    Cons

The pay is only average, which would be acceptable if the opportunities to advance weren't so few in number. They still use an antiquated performance evaluation model which is largely dependent on your relationship with your manager. It is similarly dependent on the success of the project to which you are assigned. If you are assigned to a successful project, you will be moved up in the company. However, if you are assigned to a failing project, you will work endlessly without appreciation or capacity for lateral movement within the company. Supposedly, the company encourages flexible hours with the opportunity to work from home. In practice, you will often put in over twenty hours of unpaid overtime a week, only to be told that you 'may be working hard but you're not working smart'. Upper management likewise lets mid-level management performed unchecked, and refuses to listen to any complaints of abuse or aggressive behavior.

    Advice to Management

Managers largely operate unchecked, which is a serious problem. Some managers will push all of their associate employees to second-level positions with less than a year of service and no Masters degree. Others will have you working there for years at the same level of pay, regardless of ethic, capability or education. Employees in systems engineering are glorified, while software is often treated with contempt. A balance needs to be established, and mid-level management needs to be held to a strict standard.
