I worked at Saddleback Valley USD - Mission Viejo part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Health benefits, calpers, eligible for Schools First Federal Credit Union, extensive training, frequent feedback from supervisors, performing work that was truly benefiting the children and advancing their education.

    Cons

Dealing with agressive behaviors from students, difficult to seperate with employees that have become ineffective due to burn out or indifference, limited hours available and a 9 month assignment.

    Advice to Management

Managements hands are tied due to budget constraints. I always felt supported and understood, however staffing could not improve due to lack of funds.

Teachers are not valued. Lowest paid teachers in Orange County with an adversarial superintendent and school board. Overcrowded classrooms, lack of funds for student supplies and materials.

I have been working at Saddleback Valley USD - Mission Viejo part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Fixed work schedule/hours, no dress code except shirt, if hired for summer you can expect 32+ hours per week, summer field trips, fairly easy job at most times, as a student child care leader your wage is not taxed since it is an exempt position, therefore you get the full $10.00.

    Cons

Minimum wage and no opportunity for raises unless you stay after you graduate high school, no guarantee of getting hired for summer/winter/fall recess programs, sometimes understaffed, favoritism.

It is extremely hard to move up the ladder here, you need to be with the district for years. Other than senior child care leader positions, there are rarely upper management openings.

    Advice to Management

There needs to be more communication between coordinators and leaders about strengths and weaknesses so it is not a surprise during employee reviews. Overall though, very organized program.

    Pros

Investing in current technology for all classrooms, much opportunity to employ latest technology while teaching lessons. Maybe not unique to Saddleback Valley Unified, opportunities do arise to meet more seasoned teachers that still truly enjoy teaching.

    Cons

Opportunities to sub K through 12th grades; there is teacher requesting and repeat assignments . However, there is severe lack of accurate communication among some administrators.

    Advice to Management

Management should interview substitute teachers individually allowing prospective employees to have an initial introduction to at least who is really hiring and in charge. When evaluating the true worth of any teacher, lead administrators cannot be so tight with over compensating principals. This should allow for more fair assessment of a sub teacher's day(s) per assignment. Last, intermittent management reviewing could be a valuable time for a sub teacher and management to talk candidly about sub teacher's experiences in different school settings and classroom environments We could be a valuable feedback resource to help where improving might be needed.

    Pros

Children are a joy. My staff members are amazing people. Despite poor management we make a very very good team

    Cons

kids being allowed to urinate outside, not careful with peanut allergies, children walking out of bounds and into parking lot, management does not listen at all, children are not as safe as they would like you to think they are. Site coordinators are not as qualified as they would like you to think

    Advice to Management

when a staff member goes to you about a problem with their site do not move them to another site.Listen to your staff members who are at their sites every day. And take better care of those children. Do your job as management and stop being lazy. Go out and do site checks Pay more attention to what is going on and stop playing favorites. It's very clear to everyone
