I worked at Safeway Canada full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Straight forward, learnable, exercise, friends, mutual respect

    Cons

Lack of mutual respect, work place bullying, worked like mules,

    Advice to Management

Stop treating managers so well and treat the workers with more respect and appreciation. You couldn't run the place without them. Otherwise great place to shop, not to work.

I worked at Safeway Canada full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Unionized, pay increases every 500 hours, good benifits for part timers through the union, benifits for full time through the company. Part time employees get vacation pay at the end of the year. Full timers vacation is payed when you take holidays.

    Cons

There is no good way to say this but as soon as Sobeys bought Safeway they have become a uncaring company. Expect to work every weekend and hard. Very little hours given to new hires. They promise hours but within weeks of being hired on they brop those hours down. They expect you to treat them as your first priority, but don't give enough hours to live on. Less staff than they should have on the floor. Management lie and tell you they care but really don't. Lack of training, a few hours on the computer then down to the wolves. Customers are allowed to miss treat staff, as managment will not side with employees they would rather sell that loaf of bread instead of kicking the rude customer out. They give you power to make decisions, then take it away, then give it back. They don't follow their own policies, but expect employees too. The vacation pay at the end of the year is added on to your regular check so expect large taxes off of it. Exact same pay whether your a courtesy clerk or meat cutter. They use to pay for the position your in, now every one gets the same. Starting wage is minimum yet you pay union dues. They use to have different pay scales for the different positions but no longer. It's minimum.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of Sobeys. If you came up through rank and file remember what it's like when it was Safeway.

I have been working at Safeway Canada

    Pros

Honestly, I cannot give a reason today to work for what was formerly, a well respected, highly sought after position, in a top level retail environment. The once mighty and highly regarded Canada Safeway has become the laughing stock of the grocery world. I stay there out of habit, and because I enjoy most of the people I work with.

    Cons

Union. The union enforces the stores to keep employees on once their probation period is up. You cannot reward an outstanding individual, just as you cannot chastise a poor one. Being bound by the union regulations, makes for a very expensive store to operate in a highly competitive market. Dump the union, make people fear repercussions for constantly showing up late, or phoning in sick because it's a weekend. Not having to follow union regulations regarding minimum hours, the stores could free up more hours for more p/t employees, as the wage base would be lowered, and you could have two people working for a total of the wages one person makes.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the middle management, corporate auditors, merchandisers, etc. All these people dream up new reports just to justify their position. Get back into doing what you once did well, sell groceries. Your ads are horrid now (thank you Sobey's). If people wanted Compliment products, they would have just gone to a Sobey's. Safeway shoppers are shopping elsewhere, as their is no longer anything to identify Safeway as being Safeway.

I have been working at Safeway Canada

    Pros

Fellow employees, time-off, good benifits if they ever give you enough hours to earn it and that is it.

    Cons

Pay, hours, incompetent management, use of negative reinforcement, rarely paid on time. Expected to do the work of three people.

    Advice to Management

May want to treat employees like humans instead of machines. Negative reinforcement only makes employees angry it does not work, pay your employees on time, stop playing games and give people some hours. Also, it would be beneficial to have some people in the bakery and stocking shelves instead of calling everyone in the a store to act as cashier when it is busy. Hire more cashiers!!
