I have been working at Safeway Canada full-time

    Pros

Plenty of opportunities to learn and develop skills even at university with company support. This is a large well established company. On the retail side, a grocery store requires skills and knowledge ranging from supply chain and time management to verbal/written communication and customer service. HR seems to be professionally run and supportive.

    Cons

Its a blue collar work environment where politics, backstabbing, gossip and drama take precedence over intelligent conversation, constructive dialogue and working towards organizational goals. The latter does exist albeit rarely, when you find it at a store cling on for dear life, the management at that store is likely decent. What is considered as 'going above and beyond and inquisitive' at one store may be considered as 'being too big for your boots' or 'acting too smart or arrogant or nosy' at another. No uniform company culture in the retail stores.

    Advice to Management

Pay more attention to Professionalism in the way managers work and behave. Managers set the tone for the culture of individual stores by the way they behave and what they allow to happen in their store.

I worked at Safeway Canada full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The people and the environment was everything you could ask for.

    Cons

Hours continuously got cut, leaving too much up to junior management, became extremely stressful to go to work and not be able to get my job done and keep customers happy. Spread too thin.

    Advice to Management

I'm sure they are sick of hearing this but more hours are needed at store level.
