I worked at Safeway Canada for more than a year

    Pros

Some good people to work with and dedicated to complete the mission

    Cons

New management from Albertsons changing Safeway's culture and environment...alot of good Safeway leaders have left and still dropping. Albertsons mentality is crude and blue collar...need to get them up to speed in California!

    Advice to Management

Albertsons needs to learn how Safeway culture is what made them successful.

I have been working at Safeway Canada full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Good wages if you stick it out for the long haul Good benefits/pension for Full Time (assuming you can ever get full time) Mostly good co-workers

    Cons

No employee discount Hours have been slashed, with no reduction in tasks (on the contrary, they keep adding new programs and paperwork to do) Head office comes around once a month for audits They don't staff enough cashiers, so whenever it's busy, grocery and produce get pulled to cash, leaving no one in the department

    Advice to Management

Your stores will not survive without staff. It's the front line staff who help customers, who 'engage' customers, and who fill your shelves and departments. Stop treating us like we're the stepchildren you never wanted. No one wants to work for a company who despises them.

I worked at Safeway Canada full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

    Great medical benefits ,

    Cons

No consistency in hours . This is not ideal for a family especially if you are a female in the workforce with young kids at home . Maybe transferred to any store at anytime and travel time could be far. Example I had to drive almost two extra hours a day in and out of work for two years the company finally transferred me but now it was only a 10 minute savings I my travel.

    Advice to Management

Locate female employees closer to home with young children.

I worked at Safeway Canada full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Great benefits, was fun to work with all the different work colleagues, Learned ordering, how to work efficiently, and was given specialized training in superior customer services. Overall was fun place to work, I have some long term friendships from working there. Good if you enjoy working with people. You leave your job and responsibilities at the time clock. Your family life and work life are separate.

    Cons

Having to work rotating work schedules, late nights, and worst was the mandatory 2months a year of graveyard shift. Some managers were great some were simply horrible. Limited growth in potential salary, all salaries are based on contracted values. Eventually the collaborate between union and new businesses entering the market really crashed the work environment. Many people became disgruntled and took the buyout to move on. Guess that ended up well for both union, new companies as they reduced their operating costs. and buyout employee took the money and ran... Very limited rewards for working hard, because the most promotions are first based on seniority.

    Advice to Management

Nothing really, the management has a system and its not really gonna change. So its unreasonable to ask anything different from you.

    I worked at Safeway Canada

    Pros

Good company for entry level job seekers. You learn a lot as you work along with seniors. Good chances to switch between departments in year or so. If you are working as Temp there are chances to became Permanent if you perform well.

    Cons

Salary wise they do not pay much being a retail company. Not much options outside Calgary if you are working at headoffice.

    Advice to Management

Salary structure should be decided based on the candidate skills, qualification and experience. As well as his performance for 1 year incentives should given with decent incremental.

    I worked at Safeway Canada

    Pros

Very much responsibility, very demanding and exhausting job because of scheduling shortages of hours and workers in one shift. Assistant manager basically one more worker for all departments wis some administration job also

    Cons

Be careful lifting, pulling and working with equipment because it's expected that you know the right way

    Advice to Management

Value your workers, be flexible and patience

    I worked at Safeway Canada

    Pros

Decent benifits, good vacation time starting out.

    Cons

So much micro-managment they forgot to spend money on staff needed to do the job. Split unions in departments. Non union and union managment.

    Advice to Management

Take responsibility for your actions instead of passing the buck to protect your job.

"Integrity lost that Used to be Paramount"

I worked at Safeway Canada full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Good wages and benefits. Lots of opportunity for women and ethnicities.

    Cons

No Integrity from the Top down. More like "The Firm" as far trust and truth, are concerned. No work/like balance. The Safeway Family is like a cult. No autonomy for management so no fairness at store level. What DM and HR decide, goes. If they don't like manager, it's their personal vendettas that take over.

    Advice to Management

Bring back some Integrity! Years ago that was the biggest quality Safeway brought to the workplace. Not so anymore. Perhaps, with Sobey's takeover, there will be some actual grocery business instead of the drama that has taken over. "Truth" has been lost. Start up top, lies and deception have NO place in any workplace but Safeway was a much more honest, truly caring "family".
