I worked at Safeway full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

They offer a solid Work Life Balance. The people working there are usually great to work with. Schedule and flexibility is pretty good and accolades personal situations. Solid leadership and company direction.

    Cons

The Health Benefits situation needs to be re-assessed. It's to much of a burden on the employee and the benefits create a lot of out of pocket costs. If your healthy you're basically get screwed....

Wages need to be reevaluated to be more in line with competition and industry averages.

    Advice to Management

Continue to promote work life balance and create more efficient positions and reduce wasteful ones.

I worked at Safeway full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Fun people, hard workers at the store level. Strong attention to food safety and customer satisfaction. Positive hiring practices, food community support

    Cons

Archaic management practices. Managers not fit for the job, poor leadership, incestuous promotion ladder...say "yes" to management or find a new job. Innovation and new ideas frowned upon.

    Advice to Management

Evaluate, assess, and, if results are positive, implement good ideas no matter who came up with it. Promote on merit, not on time with the company. Implement management practices that focus on the positive, not on the negative...meaning, make reward the norm, not punishment.

I worked at Safeway full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

All benefits of working at Safeway have been stripped away, replaced with a upbeat “this is the industry standard” standard statement, and a bunch of upper level managers that seem greedy, scared for their positions, and at times down right evil.

    Cons

Many of the valuable upper level managers left months ago, leaving behind the poor performing executives to take advantage of job openings. Now the new aquisistion team gets stuck with the worst of the Safeway executives.

    Advice to Management

They should seriously see how poorly staffed at the executive level, how many feel entitled to treat people poorly. Most of which put their career agenda before the companies health.

Scheduling is poorly done. Barely grant days requested, too much tasks to do when your only one there and no one to split work with.

    Advice to Management

Work on scheduling disaster to get rid of the nickname

Awful pay, customers are bad, and management is even worse. Workload is impossible for one person to finish alone, Training is awful!!!!

    Advice to Management

Pay your employees more and treat them better in turn they will work hard and be loyal. It is just awful the way you treat your workers!!!

    Pros

Job security. Layoffs rare or nonexistent.

    Cons

Actually received a promotion, then had it taken away by a company mistake. All relevant paperwork proves it. They asked me to resubmit and start over.

    Advice to Management

It is customer and company against workers and the union. Stop making employees the problem every time.

    Pros

Great way to get a lot of experience in a short period of time. Very tenured workforce, people tend to be lifers. Good people to work with and good collaboration amongst certain department.

    Cons

Little Work Life Balance. Pay is not competitive and few opportunities for promotion. Not a lot of recognition for a lot of effort and can be draining at times.

    Pros

Great opportunity for advancement, ability to work in a team environment, can easily transfer if desired. I would recommend this position for those seeking this type of opportunity.

    Cons

Just the fact that working in retail causes you to work nights, weekends and holidays. However the pros certainly out weigh the cons.

    Advice to Management

Ensure that we are getting the necessary feedback from our front-line associates on what improvements can be made at the store level.
