I worked at Safeway full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great people, opportunity to move up in company.

    Cons

Upper management is always changing, very corporate, dealing with difficult and rude people daily.

    Advice to Management

Stop transferring upper management so much. As soon as the employees get used to their mamagers they get moved to another store.

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Safeway part-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Many of the employees become your best friends. Management in the store was typically very friendly, understanding, and genuinely wanted the best for you. The reason this rating is 4 stars instead of 2 is solely based on the nice people, fun memories, and genuine kindness of the store and department managers.

    Cons

Upper management (not store level) was never friendly, understanding and certainly did not care about the employees. They were money hungry and would ignore most part-time employees. Also - harassment was not uncommon among store-level employees and wasn't taken seriously prior to the Me-Too movement.

    Advice to Management

LISTEN to people when they tell you that another employee is making them uncomfortable and do something about it. Be the best that you can by doing your job correctly, not aggressively. There are very few instances that require a cold, robotic, aggressive approach. Also, keep in mind that many of these employees WILL move on to do better things in their lives. Not everyone will be making your coffee, cutting up cold... fruit, or stocking shelves for the rest of their lives. You don't have to treat them disrespectfully just because a grocery store is their stepping stone. Lastly, even if it's not a stepping stone, those workers have the ability to make you look really good, or really bad; your attitude determines which way they lean.

    I worked at Safeway full-time

    Pros

Good coworkers, many loyal techs, and they have some great pharmacists

    Cons

Upper management completely out of touch and unavailable to adequately address any concerns. The company is disorganized and the computer system is antiquated. You work alone far too often to be safe. You are disposable and treated like trash. Grocery store pharmacy used to be the dream but as of late you're literally better off at the big box stores. So many negative things to say. RUN, don't walk.

    Advice to Management

    No point, they don't listen.

    Pros

-Stable -Predictable -Same clientele, get to know patients

    Cons

-Upper management just demands more scripts, more shots, more sales etc every year. -Started promoting flu shot in July this year -Marketing is inconsistent with product (ex keep having to advertise shingrix when it's back ordered) -Have to cut inventory short so customers have to wait a business day to order most things

I have been working at Safeway full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

benefits at 20 hours and PTO

    Cons

The company now treats pharmacist like they are disposable talent. Upper management style is to bark orders and doesn't give respect to employees. No surprise that there's no spark or enthusiasm amongst the pharmacist. It is no surprise since Albertsons acquired Safeway work culture has changed for the worst.

    Advice to Management

Take management courses to give you better tools to deal with people

    Advice to Management

Safeway has a culture of putting it's employees last. It's policies are designed to encourage a life spent at work. For those thinking of joining Safeway as store management, please do more research. Some of their policies for management include mandatory split days off, maximum 7 day vacations, and no 401k match. You will be scheduled 10.5 hour days, but you will be expected to work much longer days as a... salaried employee. My predecessor worked 16 hour days, and this was often pointed out to me. There simply is no life outside of work for management. I strongly suggest anyone being headhunted, or considering a switch to Safeway contemplate how much having a personal life matters to you. You can move up quickly, but they underpay versus competitors. Also, the more you move up the more you work. I met many main office people who worked 6 day weeks regularly. The culture at Safeway is stuck in the past, but so pervasive no one raised in the company sees it. All of the homegrown managers think it's normal to work 12+ hour days, and 6 or 7 day weeks. Coming from the outside, I know there are better options for better pay, and I quickly departed. I hope that one day the company looks at the way they treat employees, and adjusts their policies and culture.
