I have been working at Saint Louis Zoo full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The benefits are good although pay could be better. It is a laid back atmosphere with friendly staff and not to mention the animals.

    Cons

Upper management is not keyed into the people they manage. Everyone is striving to make a name for themselves and forgetting that the zoo should be priority #1, take care of your own and then expand. Not throwing millions of dollars to conservation all over the world while failing to hire seasonal help because the pay is considerably lower; just for example. Also there is no room for promotions/advancements unless someone retires or quits.

    Advice to Management

Take care of the people that work for you.... we are the ones that make you look good!

I worked at Saint Louis Zoo part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    -Great friendships
    -Free parking as an employee
-Walking around and seeing the animals on breaks
    -Free food on lunch breaks
-Management works well with scheduling conflicts (School, other job, etc.)

    Cons

-Little opportunities to move up in position
-Low pay, just barely above minimum wage ($7.76/hr)
    -Okay for a seasonal position/summer job, but not as a long-term job/career
-If you want to request off for Fourth of July, you have to do it months in advance (If Fair Saint Louis is in Forest Park, good luck getting off, even if you request off months in advance)
    -Very little appreciation for employees

    Advice to Management

Actually hire people who want to work and do what's expected of their job, not just hiring people who stand around and do nothing while talking among each other. Also, if you want your employees to appreciate you and help them enjoy their job, pay them better and offer staff a suggestion box on possible improvements within management and how working at the zoo can provide a better work experience.

I worked at Saint Louis Zoo part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Not over worked, a fairly loose and relaxing environment. A great place to meet a lot of cool people from all walks of life.

    Cons

Zero advancement chances, pennies for yearly raises, full time management does NOTHING. Hourly staff are the only people working and they get paid minimum wage.

    Advice to Management

The organization makes millions, the CEO earns more than $500,000 a year, Start paying your staff!

"Wonderful work environment, but not a lot of upward opportunity."

    Pros

The St. Louis Zoo presents a wonderful work environment filled with friendly people who are willing to lend a hand. They allow flexibility in the work environment and management is generally friendly. On top of all that, you get to see some of the world's most exotic animals on a daily basis.

    Cons

The hours at the Zoo can be challenging. Shifts can start as early as 5 am and weekends and holidays are required (animals are a 24/7/365 ordeal). People frequently think they will get to play with animals, but in fact you only watch the animals. No close contact is allowed and people are fired for touching the animals (unless its in their job description).

    Advice to Management

Senior management generally does a pretty good job of managing resources. The one aspect that can be frustrating is that sometimes management puts a premium on making money and not on animal welfare-for example summer concerts held at the zoo.

I worked at Saint Louis Zoo part-time

    Pros

Great location, friendly working staff, event team was amazing! Full time benefits are part of the museum district, and are a wonderful long-time addition to the family.

    Cons

Busy days are REALLY busy and make it hard to navigate around the space, dodging families.

    Advice to Management

Moving people within the company from another section may not give you the best suited candidate. The interview process was redundant.
