I worked at Salal Credit Union full-time

    Pros

The organization is growing very quickly so there are ample opportunities to advance. Lot's of great talented employees in all areas of the business.

    Cons

The compensation is low both base salary and commission. The benefits package is mediocre; cheap healthcare, vision and dental but it can be free, minimal vacation accrual, "school paid for" is a joke - they make it impossible to get funding for and take it away the minute you do something wrong leaving you with thousands of dollars of debt you were not planning on having. There are no real policies or procedures so no matter how hard you try to use your resources or reach out and ask an "expert" you will be wrong. The training or lack there of is a joke. You get a week in the main office learning things that are not actually correct or current so you're set up to fail the minute you step in to your new position. Lot's of cliques and drama between people and departments. So much so that it has a nickname, "Dexter Drama".

    Advice to Management

See above Cons and fix them. Get employee feedback regularly and make the necessary changes to hire and retain good talent.

    Pros

There are some really great people if you are lucky enough to work with them.

    Cons

Total mess. Nobody can master their position. Management would rather make excuses than try to fix the problems. They tend to turn feedback around on the employees, and accuse us as not being "team players". They get angry if you try to sit with them to address issues. HR does not help the employees, they back up even the most inept managers.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees and maybe there wouldn't be so much turn over.

I have been working at Salal Credit Union full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Values input from employees at all levels; actively works to develop talent; invests in employee satisfaction of position and experience; upper management is extremely approachable and receptive to feedback; allows employees to bring their unique personalities to their work; doesn't micromanage or focus only on hitting goals; offers lots of opportunities for those looking to advance in the industry

    Cons

Benefits and compensation not as competitive; corporate re-structuring creates a sense of instability in daily job duties; shifting priorities can make you feel like you're trying to hit a moving target; answers to questions might be different depending on who you ask; procedures are not always consistent from week to week; lack of competitive commission and compensation structure makes retaining top talent difficult

    Advice to Management

You are on the right track! Much of the re-structuring is aimed at addressing most of the cons, and that's awesome. Recognize how the corporate re-structuring is affecting your employees and the additional stress/strain it puts on them. Bring the compensation plans, particularly the bonus/incentive/variable compensation program in line with our fellow CU's. Proactively work to retain promising talent by offering salaries that reflect their abilities and performance rather than their job title.

I have been working at Salal Credit Union full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Benefits are very competitive along with the starting compensation for most of their positions. They feed you well and use food as rewards and don't skimp on the amount or quality.

    Cons

No parking for a lot of employees with no or little parking or commute incentive. It is apparent that all department representation isn't considered when making decisions and changes making every change in vender, process, and implementation incomplete and patched together for fixes. Fear has created an environment where there is little to no employee comaraderie. Silos, lack of trust, and lack of communication make it impossible to get anything done and can be seen in all departments. This is very evident if you look at the turn over throughout the organization especially the last few years. After awhile in this environment the pros: pay and benefits loose their luster.

    Advice to Management

Though they have managed the financial bottom line really well or at least that is the message they send each month. Many employees who have longevity and contribute greatly to the day to day operations of this organization are gone or are actively looking for opportunities; come to think of it there are plenty of new employees leaving too. It does not appear that either the CEO or HR has any concern about the max exit that unfortunately looks from my perspective to show no signs of slowing. Please show concern and look for what is at the root of this internal chaos the past few years.

I have been working at Salal Credit Union full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Family-like atmosphere, relational leadership, clear vision of future, addresses areas of opportunity. Though many changes have occurred in recent years, it really seems the leaders are taking time to make strong and positive changes to the organization. If you work here, you will have opportunities to contribute, grow, and develop.

    Cons

It seemed like communication through the organization could have been stronger in the past.

    Advice to Management

continue to address root issues and invest in developing employees.

    Pros

    Committed, hardworking and friendly employees

    Cons

Senior managers are experts at assigning blame to underlings while shifting any responsibility away from themselves. People are constantly scapegoated and fired by management. There is a ridiculously high turnover rate. At the same time the company expresses its commitment to "core values" of treating employees well, which is a joke, since you are completely dispensable if you make the slightest mistake.

This company is going to implode under the stupidity of its management. Besides that, a large bulk of their income is from mortgage refinances. That is declining with rising interest rates, and they will have a high risk of layoffs or being acquired by another credit union.

    Don't work here!!

    Advice to Management

Stop scapegoating and blaming. Live up to the values you say you believe in.

I worked at Salal Credit Union full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Great co-workers, starting salary fair

    Cons

Lots of pressure to sell, sell or lose your job. Unless you have a supportive manager, no room to advance even if you have great reviews and meet goals.

    Advice to Management

Support your branch staff, know and understand what is going on..Listen to concerns and help make changes.

I have been working at Salal Credit Union full-time

    Pros

free medical and dental insurance; some great people to work with.

    Cons

senior management are firing too many people in the past 12 months. I would say turnover rate is around 35% and you are looking at a company with 100 employees. They hire people and would fire them within 3 months. Avoid this place.

    Advice to Management

Stop firing people for small mistakes. Train your staff. Focus on what you are doing well, instead of doing bad loan to increase your assets.
