I have been working at Salem Media Group full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Love most of my co-workers!

    Cons

No raises, disorganized, no growth, no communication

    Advice to Management

Require employee yearly reviews and start putting raises into the budget each year. Stop micro managing and allow your General Managers, VP, Directors and Dept Managers to manage and make decisions on their own without Corp having to sign off first. Work harder in employee engagement and recognition outside of corp. This business has so much potential but needs corp support to reach it!

I worked at Salem Media Group full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Enjoyable coworkers, free snacks, helpful local HR

    Cons

low pay, long hours, skirting overtime requirements, passive aggressive managers, no upward mobility, no annual reviews, unprofessional treatment of younger employees, actual treatment of employees does not line up with values, poor communication, no training or continued education within your field

    Advice to Management

You can only keep employees so long with free snacks, promises of future opportunities, and guilting tactics. The fact that the company is supposed to hold Christian values is not an excuse for poor pay and poor communication. Build (at least) annual reviews into your company culture so that employees know how to improve performance. Give younger staff opportunities for responsibility instead of treating them like your children. Don't send passive aggressive emails when employees reach out to HR about questionable tactics. People can afford their own donuts and snacks when you pay them wages that match their job description and market. Eventually employees will remember that and find another job that pays better and probably has a better culture too.

I worked at Salem Media Group full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Very good, on going sales training. Christian station with ties to many worthwhile ministries and Christian Chamber of Commerce. Some very nice people work there.

    Cons

Management very short sighted in planning and only cares about selling to make their month. Doesn't prioritize goals and they change from week to week. Lots of meetings and micro-management; very little administrative support. Huge sales turnover with senior reps holding all the billing accounts. Lots of politics and favoritism; poor communication between departments. Lots of non paid additional work hours staffing Discount Shopping Club and station events. No work life balance. Poor pay.

    Advice to Management

Management too heavy and uncertain what most of them do besides have meetings and get on sales for not making the month. Pay attention to why sales turnover is so high and take responsibility for so many people that "weren't the right fit" even though most of them have been very successful before and after Salem.

    Pros

Good training, well executed promotions, company projects a positive image. Some very talented people who are good to work with.

    Cons

Most new reps start with no account list and none that I know of have made it much past their 1st year because they can't make a living. It is very micromanaged with lots of reports, conference calls, meetings, and admin functions; with very little admin support. A handful of reps have been there forever and have all the active accounts. Expectations unrealistic for 100% new business. Heavy management staff, constantly changing priorities and pressure is huge towards end of month. Communication between departments is poor and it is a politically toxic environment.

    Advice to Management

Don't carry account lists and spend more time grooming and helping your people succeed rather than criticizing, punishing or taking away accounts. Stop micromanaging; it creates an environment of untrustworthiness and anxiety. Be open to suggestions and new ideas. Distribute accounts fairly.

I worked at Salem Media Group (Less than a year)

    Pros

The pros were just staff meetings and meeting some nice sales people.

    Cons

All managers were not Christian and treated everyone with absolutely no respect. If you want to feel used...worthless...and get paid a misery this is the place to work.

    Advice to Management

Be kind to your employees. Change all managers in Boston they are all in only for the money and are never trying to work as a team. They all backstab each other. Extremely fake environment. Could not stand one more minute in this company

    Pros

there is not much as a pro other than staff meetings and working in a Christian station, 401k match. dental and eye insurance.

    Cons

managers treat others TERRIBLE, no respect for others, they think they own you. Def Bipolar company. very high health insurance not affordable for most people. the pay is VERY LOW and you are doing a bunch of peoples jobs at the same time. they do not value the good work you have done. They only want more and more from you without an increase on respect, or pay. They only care about how much money they are making for the month, they will put anyone on the air as long as they pay.

    Advice to Management

Put real Christian Managers with REAL Christian Characters.
