I have been working at Salk Institute (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Core facilities are fabulous, and the speakers every week are the cream of the crop. Everyone is very good at what they do at the Institute, and are available to you for help if you need advice on a project.

    Cons

Being a postdoc isn't easy - period. On top of it all, the Salk has a lot of work to do to make the postdocs feel valued at the institute.

Former Employee - Lab Assistant in La Jolla, CA

    Pros

This is a great place to work with post-doctorate researchers and receive mentoring. Plus, unlike many lab positions on campus, this lab pays their lab assistants, which is a nice bonus.

    Cons

THe demands of working in a lab are higher than others since you do have to work 16+ hours a week even during finals week

I worked at Salk Institute full-time

    Pros

There is a unique supportive work family and environment among this group. The attentive supervisors work hard to ensure we had the tools to perform our best.

    Cons

Being a non-profit institution, there is much more work than there are hands. You are overworked for a low pay.
Not much room for upward movement (only when someone leaves will a space be made available)
