I worked at Sallie Mae (Less than a year)

I worked at Sallie Mae (More than 10 years)

    Pros

They have good benefits, they pay fairly well and the medical benefits were reasonably priced. I did like the fact that at the time they tiered the cost of medical insurance placed on the employee based on income so that call center people were not paying the same as executives for the same insurance.

    Cons

Tied too closely to political environment which drives their ability to do their jobs as needed.

I worked at Sallie Mae full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Beautiful, newly renovated building - no expensive spared. Relatively simple job and if you were in the right place at the right time (knew the right people), you could move up/out of the department as well as get promoted. They promote within.

    Cons

Overly professional. Very stoic and impersonal atmosphere. Despite it being a smaller company, you feel like just another number. Really low company morale...specifically in that department. Very HIGH turn-over rate.

    Advice to Management

Perk up...you spend more time at Sallie Mae than you do in the real world...so make the experience worth while. No one wants to work somewhere that they literally dread coming to.

    Pros

Project / team orientation to getting things done.

    Cons

Company lacks long term strategic views. Private Student alone not likely to sustain company long term.

    Advice to Management

Diversify into other Consumer related businesses that are not just Student and Campus related.

I worked at Sallie Mae full-time

    Pros

    Generally a good work-life balance.
Collegial atmosphere at the lower levels.
    Compensation is generally competitive.
There is a real focus on being good corporate citizens.

    Cons

Things can get political amongst higher level management, which has created strategic challenges.
Everybody hates to pay their student loans, so there is residual negative feeling toward the company at times.

    Advice to Management

Given that the government has put limits on the core business (ultimately leading to the Sallie-Navient split) Management has not been very aggressive in pursuing new growth areas.

    Advice to Management

Don't ignore that talent in the room.
