I worked at Sallie Mae (More than 10 years)

    Pros

They have good benefits, they pay fairly well and the medical benefits were reasonably priced. I did like the fact that at the time they tiered the cost of medical insurance placed on the employee based on income so that call center people were not paying the same as executives for the same insurance.

    Cons

Tied too closely to political environment which drives their ability to do their jobs as needed.

I have been working at Sallie Mae (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Sallie Mae has a beautiful campus

    Cons

Operations Management knows who they are going to hire internally before they post positions
Operations Management is quick to judge and use perception
There is to much work and not enough people in Operations
People are stuck in their roles for years before possibly moving up
    Operations Management plays favorites
You work for a student loan company but your degrees and certifications are not acknowledged
Operations Upper Management doesn't let leaders lead
Management is afraid to make decisions on the fly, everything requires a meeting and takes days/weeks for a response.
There computer systems are horrible. Everyday there's some type of computer issue that requires the help desk.
Agents need to be logged into15 systems to complete one call. This has to change.

    Advice to Management

There needs to be Sallie Mae management values followed by each supervisor, manager, directors, sr. directors and up.

I worked at Sallie Mae full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Beautiful, newly renovated building - no expensive spared. Relatively simple job and if you were in the right place at the right time (knew the right people), you could move up/out of the department as well as get promoted. They promote within.

    Cons

Overly professional. Very stoic and impersonal atmosphere. Despite it being a smaller company, you feel like just another number. Really low company morale...specifically in that department. Very HIGH turn-over rate.

    Advice to Management

Perk up...you spend more time at Sallie Mae than you do in the real world...so make the experience worth while. No one wants to work somewhere that they literally dread coming to.

    Pros

There is a potential for unlimited overtime, bonus incentives for exceeding goals, the training for the job was tremendous, I liked helping educate people so their credit was not affected long-term.

    Cons

It was second shift, you felt restricted to your desk, some customers were over the top with their anger
