I worked at Sallie Mae (More than a year)

    Pros

Tight knit with the agent and most supervisors.

    Cons

Not organized. Lacking communication and structure on the main level of being in sales to provide loans to students and cosigners for college. Upper management was rarely available to have a presence in the department. Morale was very low.

I worked at Sallie Mae full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I am racking my brain trying to think of an positives about Sallie Mae as a workplace and not one will come to mind.

    Cons

Unprofessional managers, incredibly low pay, constant calls, "bonus" is unobtainable, no upward mobility, there's a reason building security is so tight. Promotions in collections will never happen because the managers will sabotage you so they don't have to get back on the phones. I left after a few months because the management was so horrible.

    Advice to Management

Just stop. You suck at your jobs, all of you. I've worked in many call centers and this has the most incompetent management system I've ever witnessed.

    Pros

For me it was the location - 10 mins ride to work was amazing - but this would not apply to everyone.

    Cons

Horrible benefits all around - from time off to medical which had very high deductibles and only 75% coverage. I had the worst manager of my career by FAR which pushed me out of there after a year. I would have left sooner if my home life would have allowed. The discouraging part was to find out that I was the 3rd or 4th analyst to leave due to this manager. The pattern and feedback to HR did not change a thing - in fact, she was promoted.

    Advice to Management

To keep good people, you need good benefits and career paths. HR should recognize patters of abusive managers.

I have been working at Sallie Mae full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Lots of good perks. Bonuses, unlimited overtime, and the management does a great job keeping everyone motivated.

    Cons

It can be kind of stressful because I had to work long hours to ensure that I would hit my bonus. I missed out on other things but made a lot of money.

    Advice to Management

Just really take the time to understand the employees and how stressful the job can actually be. The managers should also know how to do second voices.

I worked at Sallie Mae full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Indy location is now mainly IT positions, but still has several other positions. Good work environment. Business casual attire. Company is set up for good growth short & long term. Entry level positions to management. Decent benefits.

    Cons

Average salary. Ever changing business, so if you do not like change it is not the place for you. Media continuously only gives bad publicity and hardly ever discusses the positive benefits of allowing people to find a way to pay for college.

    Advice to Management

Continue to allow employees to grow with the company. Make sure salaries & benefits stay competitive in the Indy job arena.
