I have been working at Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

"Most" employees are very nice. Benefits. Higher than average amount of days off.

    Cons

They recruit Indian Community Members that are not genuinely qualified for their positions. So, everyone suffers.

    Advice to Management

Higher legitimately qualified employees who know honestly what they are doing, have a true sense of time management and work ethic.

I worked at Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

One of the best benefits package

    Cons

No teamwork & lack of camaraderie within the co-workers & work ethics

    Advice to Management

I would advise that they take a closer look at some of their employees, they might continue to loose their best employees.

    Pros

There are a lot of benefits working for the Community. Most people from different departments are easy to work with on projects.

    Cons

It seems it is difficult to move upward when there are not any clear paths for career progression. Promotions in the department are rare, management comes from outside.

    Advice to Management

Re-evaluate / establish career progression paths and consider promoting and training from within. Reviews contain plenty of advice to excel in current position but there aren't any clear objectives to reach to get to the next level.

I worked at Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Salaries - Higher salaries compared to other local Public Sector agencies. This allows SRPMIC to attract applicants.

    Cons

    Inexperienced Upper Management
    Non-Native bias
    No job security
    No career paths defined
    Poor work and life balance

    Advice to Management

I worked in the IT Department while at SRPMIC. Having worked in several IT shops previously, I would say that this IT Department was the worst experience in my career. The Director and many of the Management Staff were not on the same page for planning and support to the staff. If you like to be micro-managed with insane and illogical decision making from management, then you might by thrive in this environment with tremendous turnover.

    "Non-Natives Not Welcome"

    Pros

Great benefits, great on work/life balance, quarterly meetings that are fun, plenty of holidays (standard Christmas, etc. but also SRPMIC Day, birthday leave, etc.), Roundhouse Cafe can be a good place to eat breakfast and/or lunch, celebrate events like Halloween, visibility of the President and Vice-President (meaning they make regular appearances so that's nice to see executive people amongst the regular employees), great use of technology, the Two Waters buildings are state of the art to a certain extent, close nit community has its pros, people outside of your division are great to you and recognize you as a good employee, they give you your own Blackberry (although that could be a con since you'll always be expected to answer calls/emails no matter the time),

    Cons

You become trapped. The Community pays you well but you get sucked into it. If you want to leave, you seemingly can't because you'll have a hard time finding something that pays similarly. Getting paid is great of course, but not at the cost of you losing yourself.

Some aspects of certain divisions are corrupt. There's an approach of if someone doesn't ask about something don't mention it, even if its something very important that has been decided to be kept in the dark.

Like with other reservations, there is so much red tape its insane. Nothing can be done officially without the BIA's approval.

Non-Natives tend to be looked down upon in the sense that upper management would much rather have a Community member in your position. Many lack the education so they're forced to hire Non-Natives. You're held in high regard if you one or both of these: a native and a person who has worked for the Community for many years. If you're not that, expect to be out of there quickly as you're just a place holder until they can find a Native to replace you.

Many people who live on the Community are stuck in the past. Many don't understand certain things and blame whatever it is on the existing administration or employees.

There is almost no training for any positions. Management provides very little guidance and shun you if you inquire. It seems like they have no idea what they're doing sometimes. The regulations and related are constantly changing so you're often left wondering what just happened.

The pros seem very inviting and maybe the cons are on a personal level, but if you decide to work here be prepared to put up with a bunch of stuff you didn't intend to and find that you have no way out without starting over from where you were before getting there. My advice would be to not get lured in and stay away.

Once you're in your position don't expect a promotion for some time.

    Advice to Management

Treat people with more respect and don't be two-faced.
