    Pros

You get into the market and you take advantage of the benefits.

    Cons

I've seen some of the best and youngest talent leave after they've been mismanaged and mistreated, and improperly onboarded. Independent thought isn't appreciated; especially with the desire to actually change the way they do business. The building itself probably has several safety violations.

    Advice to Management

You won't grow unless you take risks. That includes staff and working with them. Also - every department needs to onboard their employees properly and guide them. Get to know the employees and training managers correctly. Management style is important. HR really needs to hire employees faster to fix shortage and gaps, but the culture internally needs to change and be proactive. Otherwise, work/life balance won't be attained and your talent will go elsewhere.

I have been working at SamTrans full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

First thing to understand here is that each department is managed quite differently. My department is very casual, as long as you get your work done. There is flexibility if you need it. Some departments are tough to work in, I understand.

The biggest general pro is the commute. My commute costs me $0. Staff at Central (San Carlos) get a free Caltrain GoPass and SamTrans rides. That took me off 101, which alone was worth it, but add in the ZERO cost of my commute and it's a whole new life suddenly. That's money in the bank right there.

There's a chance to do some real good here. Transportation is one of our nation's biggest challenges right now and it directly relates to livable cities, community and environmental health. With High Speed Rail and Caltrain Modernization happening, it's very exciting time around here.

The benefits here are very good. CalPERS is good. Medical, dental and vision. PTO and floating holidays.

My position is quite rewarding and exciting, but not all roles here are.

    Cons

There's a new GM in charge now and a re-org is on the horizon. Hopefully this will help reinvigorate the aging managers and processes in place.

It does have a bit of that "government agency" feel.

    Advice to Management

Modernize!! Recruit and retain younger talent. Look around the Valley and see what other companies do around their corporate culture.

    Pros

    Stretch your skillset, great benefits.

    Cons

Adversarial workplace...constant tension between union and management...bottom line is only REAL consideration.

    Advice to Management

Quit napping and start managing things you think you're too good to deal with. Take ownership of assets and not employees.

I worked at SamTrans (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Benefits, PERS, quick accumulation of paid time off, regular business hours for the most part. Get in the right group and you are golden.

    Cons

Typical secretive government management mentality. Drink the cool aid, suck up, or leave. Get in the wrong group (the IT department comes to mind) and if you have any self respect you will be looking for an exit. Unless, of course, you drink deeply of the cool aid. Or enjoy being talked down to.

    Advice to Management

No point giving advice, they've had a (not cheap) management consultant giving them advice for years that they essentially ignore. He says be more open. They say, seriously?

    Pros

The people are fun to work with. Great place for older adults to retire from. Work-Life balance it perfect. You go home went its time to leave.

    Cons

Most of management has been here too long. There were great perks in the past. Everything has been stripped down to bare bones.

    Advice to Management
