The workplace culture is as great as they say it is
Aug 25, 2022 - Anonymous EmployeeRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Having been in the workforce for almost ten years now, I can confidently say my job at Sammons is the best one I've had. The healthy workplace culture that's advertised is exactly as promised. I believe Sammons very thoughtfully hires people that they really believe will work well with others. The work-life balance is excellent, including half days every Friday and truly shutting off when I go home each night (my department doesn't even allow work email on our phones). The benefits are generous and hard to match. I've never had a better retirement plan, and I even worked for the federal government previously. I also appreciate the flexibility to work remote a couple days a week or on an as-needed basis. While some may think working with annuities is boring, they've cultivated a culture of employee appreciation that's always keeping you involved in the community and keeping you entertained with lots of workplace activities and rewards. I genuinely appreciate their commitment to charitable giving and their employees. I got two bonuses within my first six months with the company! While I don't think anyone can truly say they enjoy going to work every day, I genuinely enjoy the companionship of my colleagues every day, and have never felt that sense of dread that many people feel going to work (and that I've felt at previous jobs).
Cons
In today's world more and more employees are looking for remote-only options, and Sammons does encourage employees to primarily come into the office versus work from home - but I am personally very social so I enjoy coming in!!!

The company is great - but certain divisions are toxic
May 1, 2023 - Anonymous Employee in West Des Moines, IARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Friday afternoons off and ESOP make all the bad things disappear. 90% of the people at the company are wonderful to work with. Nice new facility in the WDM location.
Cons
Unfortunately, the 10% bad apples are in leadership. Beware of the SIG division specifically, leadership is very controlling, doesn’t trust experts or care for your opinion. They manage to make every project or initiative as complicated as possible with no regard for the manpower it takes to get these off the ground. Not willing to invest in technology or add more people to the bench to get it done. Back-to-back high-profile projects means no time to work on goals that drive your bonus.

Great culture, just don't get sick
Apr 19, 2023 - Senior Software DeveloperRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
They go to a lot of effort to make you feel loved and wanted, which I think is really all anybody wants at work--besides benefits, that is. They do a lot of remote work, so that's good. Salary is average.
Cons
There's no paid sick time! You start with 4 weeks of PTO a year, which seemed generous--until I learned that this includes paid sick time. Since 4 weeks could reasonably be considered a year's worth of vacation time, that means there's effectively no paid sick time.

- Truly believe and align with stated company values - Amazing benefits for the market - Ability to work from home, hybrid, or in office (whatever works best for employee) - My leadership chain truly cares for their employees
Cons
- a lot of change occurring at this time - communication across teams and departments needs improvement - some levels of leadership could use additional leadership training

Pros
Strong company with bright future; leadership that listens to employees; stability with continued growth; opportunities for development and career advancement for those who apply themselves.
Cons
While there are opportunities to grow, at times feels really difficult to get approval for additional staffing which could lead to burn-out of existing team members.

Cons

They preach culture but don’t always show it
Apr 5, 2023 - ManagerRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Love the people I work with and the half day Fridays.
Cons
For a company that preaches how great their culture is, the benefits are just ok. Culture to me means you care about the employee as a whole individual, but that is not shown in the benefits. Only 2 weeks paid parental leave, which is horrible.

Benefits are great - Company is great - Culture is great - Pay "not so much"

Great benefits, paid time off, ESOP.
Cons
Share the wealth and compensate for all of the pushing and working with skeleton crew. Many people think SD and surrounding areas are a cheap place to live and it is not.
