I worked at Sampson County Schools full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Sampson County Schools is a system that is small enough for everyone to feel like they are a part of the solution. Most of the schools have smaller than average student enrollment, so the staff is small as well, but very friendly, courteous and professional. An employee is known, not just at their school, but all the way up to the County Office staff. Sampson County Schools is also very technologically savvy. They may not have a laptop for every student (yet), but they continually strive to update and provide their staff and students with the most feasible technology available.

    Cons

The same complaint that you will hear from every teacher - we are underpaid! But the work is awesome. Also, because the schools are smaller, especially the high schools, you will not find as many of the AP and Honors courses and other programs as you would at the larger schools. But, many on-line courses are offered.

    Advice to Management

Thank you for supporting your staff - I certainly appreciated all you did. Even with limited budgets, you always budgeted enough for professional development workshops and conferences to be attended; for materials to be evaluated; and technology to be utilized.

I have been working at Sampson County Schools (More than a year)

    Pros

The supportive staff in the county office and in the school.

    Cons

Location, Not enough department collaboration time built into the teacher work day.

    Advice to Management

There needs to be more time set aside for departmental collaboration between schools built into the teacher work days.

  3. "Mixed Feelings"

    Pros

The schools are small, and you don't have most of the discipline problems you would have in a larger school. This doesn't mean classes aren't overcrowded though. The schools are in rural communities with down to earth families.

    Cons

Those down to earth families and small schools are very cliquish and aren't open minded to outsiders from the community. Too many chiefs and not enough Indians. No funds for teaching materials. Focus on the negative with the positive rarely commended.

    Advice to Management

Show your teaching staff better support and encouragement.

I worked at Sampson County Schools full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The students were generally great to work with, and many faculty members were friendly and helpful. Library and computer access for students good.

    Cons

Very little support for new teachers.
    No feedback on discipline referrals.
    Little feedback on job performance.
No time to find & select appropriate classroom materials.
Veteran staff assumed that everyone already knew everything.

    Advice to Management

Respond to problems in a more effective manner. Let employees know how they are doing. Document policies & procedures better [e.g. Discipline]--don't just say "we are working on them" and give no progress reports.
