Technical Account Manager

Being a woman in tech, I only recently started advocating for myself at work about advancement opportunities. Because of this I wanted to ask this question to my male counterparts. When you have 1:1's with your direct reports and talk about career growth / aspirations what is your managers’ response typically? I’d like to gauge how my experience (negative) differs from others. For instance are you met with blockades, enthusiasm, dread, etc?

Great at first, but things become clear after honeymoon phase

    Pros

Great benefits and annual bonus if you're full-time. Even get discounts and sometimes free things. There's a good amount of diversity and open-minded people.

    Cons

For a large company like Samsung, you would think a lot of processes are streamlined very well, but it's not. There's a lot of manual work, which is a little shocking because these are things that could absolutely be automated. They don't provide any real training, you basically shadow people, and most times people don't actually understand what's happening, so you get mixed answers from different people.. within the same team. The directors put pressure on you to resolve issues, but it's very difficult when the root problem is out of your hands, so you're basically putting a bandaid on everything. And if you get unlucky, you can end up in a team where management plays favorites. You can be the hardest working or smartest person there, but if you're not a doormat to management, they make it apparent you're not liked. I haven't received that treatment, as I like to stay invisible, but I've witnessed really good, hard-working people get treated very unfairly just because they talk back about how overworked they are, etc. If you just want to puff up your resume, go for it, but be warned, you won't have a life once you work here.

    Pros and cons

    Pros

The pay was great! If you were under a good DM, then the job was much better. I got to travel 2-4 times a year. You visit multiple locations each work day (might not be a pro for everyone but it was for me) You make your own schedule for where to visit each day, just have to make sure you're seeing every store the minimum times the company asks. You get the new phones coming out before they are released (can't use then until after but still cool). You get to do all kinda of events which I enjoyed. Samsung was one of the few tech companies who had internal reps which means we worked directly for Samsung instead of a 3rd party for most of my time with them.) The benefits (for Samsung employees) were amazing!

    Cons

Went from being salaried to hourly. With this type of job, (mostly 3rd party employers) the company is always wanting to save money so they do a lot more restructures, position eliminations, and mass lay-offs than, say, an office job or corporate job.(but the pay is more.) This also means they change the 3rd party companies they use sometimes and tou have to reapply for the job you were already doing and might not get rehired. Its really not for someone looking for a long-term career because of everything mentioned above.

    Horrible culture for minorities

    Pros

Originally the work was interesting and the team dynamic was great. The pay is below average for the tech industry, but the benefits are pretty attractive.

    Cons

Huge lack in diversity. It’s far too hierarchical, which makes it impossible to get anything done. Due to the org size, it’s hard to feel like you’re a part of a true team. I had an issue with my manager and took it to HR. When my manager found out she told me that HR was only there to protect the company, not us, so I shouldn’t go to them.

Great benefits and pay but doesn't understand how to keep its talent

Jul 31, 2022 - Senior Manager in Plano, TX
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

The company pays very well (at least from my own experience, which admittedly is very limited as the company indirectly discourages salary discussions) and has great benefits (good healthcare plans and options, 5% matching 401K, almost guaranteed annual bonus, employee discounts and holiday gift on Samsung.com, etc.). From a career perspective, working for a huge global brand is a great experience to understand the tremendous work that goes into all of the work to sell its products, including the interaction with HQ in South Korea. In other words, if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere.

    Cons

The company doesn't seem to understand how to retain its most talented employees - i.e., employees that can work almost anywhere - other than the golden handcuffs mentioned in the "Pros" section. There is a well developed process to evaluate individual performance for the year that affects bonus pay, but there is no company-wide and clear information regarding promotions - it is entirely up to each individual department and/or team to decide who gets promoted and why and largely seems to be decided by non-performance-related things like visibility and company politics. As a result, employees become disillusioned and questions like "Why is this person a director or VP?" abound (which is also not fair to the person in question).

Good place to grow and learn.

Sep 7, 2022 - Director in Ridgefield Park, NJ

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Some of the best base compensation in the industry for new hires especially. If you are reading this and feel that isn't the case for you, you are experiencing salary compression and should work with your manager or pursue jobs outside the company.

    Cons

Probably not unique to Samsung, but the rating system is bell curved. So the smaller the team size you are on, the harder your promotion and comp growth will be. If there are 5 outstanding people in total on one team of 5 people. Only 1 will receive the high rating, maybe another will get second highest, the rest will be average. Sometimes management is forced to give a below average rating to meet the curve. If you get a average or meets rating, you can not get promoted or even apply for a job internally. That is a major flaw, because by design the company is going to curve many top performers to average rating. Other than that, there are bad managers amongst great ones, same as any company. Interview them as much as they interview you. Having spent a lifetime there and now working somewhere else, I can say the culture is tough and the expectations are unrealistic. Maybe not unique to just Samsung, but lots of burn out and LOA during Covid years.
