I worked at Samsung Research America full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Working on the latest technologies allows east access to latest technologies, tools. Opportunity to learn many new technologies.

    Cons

Too much of politics. Very poor management. No work life balance and poor salary. Lot of Korean influence in the company (e.g. you are offered a Korean language class. Most of the high level meetings switch to Korean within 10 min)

    Advice to Management

Be able to recognize a person with real talent/abilities rather than the one who talks more.

    Disapproves of CEO

I have been working at Samsung Research America for more than a year

    Pros

Compensation and health benefits are very good. The outlook for the place is bad, but Samsung is a huge company, it should fare better compared to other US companies in a down turn. Asian companies tend to resist lay offs until their core business fall apart.

    Cons

Incredible amount of politics at every level of the organization. Groups refuse to work with each other and fails to communicate, creating absolutely horrible/meaningless engineering designs Products are *functional* because of the endless last minute work around and tons of man hours thrown on to projects. If you are an engineer who values your time and care about what you do, don't come here. You will very... likely be paying the price for someone else's decision through overtime. If you are into playing with politics and can speak Korean, this is a great place for you.

    Advice to Management

There are some visible attempt at fixing the place. But this culture is beyond fixing. Good luck.

I worked at Samsung Research America

    Pros

Decent salary and benefits. Many talented engineers.

    Cons

No management, no planning, daily change in direction. Requests from HQ are the utmost urgency/importance. Managers do not know what engineers are working on. Managers assign irrelevant and meaningless tasks to engineers. Managers assign wrong tasks to wrong engineers. Difficult to communicate with other teams. Frequent request to compare different technologies that are not really in the same domain.... Decisions are made based on politics. Smart engineers are not utilized to their capacity.

    Advice to Management

Don't try running the place like a Korean company. Let engineers do the jobs they are hired to do.

I have been working at Samsung Research America full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Intelligent co-workers, great benefits, exciting when the parent company is doing well. Chance to work at one of the world's top tech companies and make an impact.

    Cons

When earnings are down they get very strict with cost-cutting measures, many of which seem more symbolic in nature than anything else and can be quite illogical / disruptive to productivity. Headquarters is located in Korea, and can be overbearing and micro-managing with US locations -- making it feel as though there is a lack of trust. USA is the global innovation leader, you need to trust your Americans more.

    Advice to Management

Petition our stakeholders in Korea to allow for greater freedom and creativity in R & D efforts to avoid letting your engineers fall into a pattern of becoming merely supporting actors on HQ's production efforts, rather than researchers exploring truly innovative projects.

I have been working at Samsung Research America

    Pros

Decent pay for job Flexible work arrangements Competitive benefits (health, 401K) Company stability Generally good products

    Cons

A Korean company in the US. Korean management culture is very different from US culture Poor IT infrastructure--it seems like they actively try to make it difficult to get work done Little recognition Impossible to get promoted, no room for advancement No connection to customers

    Advice to Management

Work on career planning and advancement Either give in and just become a Korean subsidiary or figure out how to compete with other Silicon Valley companies
