I worked at San Antonio full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

It is a great first summer job and an enjoyable experience. You meet and engage with the community residents, teach swim lessons, and earn a really good salary for a summer job.

    Cons

The summer heat can take a toll on your body if you don't wear enough sunscreen. Since it is a public pool there will be times when lifeguards are expected to clean all kinds of bodily fluids from the pool and bathrooms.

I have been working at San Antonio full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Great benefits
    Flexible Hours
    Relaxed, stress-free environment

    Cons

Pay could be a little more competitive which makes it hard to attract the best job candidates in certain professional fields.
Micro-managers in some departments across the City; need to be more hands-off which would enable the professional development of subordinates

    Advice to Management

    See cons above.

    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee

    Pros

Being able to assist in projects before they were made public. The feel of helping out your community and making a difference.

    Cons

Pay is not keeping up with private sector so turnover of good talent seemed high. Physical working environment seems stale but that should be improving with new building.

  7. "Good enough for government work"

    StarStarStarStarStar
    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee
    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee

    Pros

Lots of different positions throughout the city means that your potential for movement up or laterally is high. Lots of leave offered, and insurance is pretty great.

    Cons

Administration heavy management and lack of communication is frustrating. There are so many COSA employees that you feel like a cog in a machine. Individual managers are totally hit or miss, and little to no coaching is given to bad managers to help them improve. The pay is lower than industry standards.

    Advice to Management

Increase communication, increase salaries, and increase opportunities for employees to improve. Realize that high turnover is indicating something about the workplace and move to fix it.

    Pros

One of the best reasons to work for the city is the awesome benifits.
