I have been working at San Diego Center for Children full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    - One of the best assets about SDCC is its leadership. I left to go to another company for a while and ended up coming back because an awesome opportunity opened up. One of the main reasons it was such an easy choice to come back is because of the leadership here. We have some of the most genuine, caring, and clinically sound people in the field. I learn so much from all of them. - My program has a great team environment and we have a lot of fun! - Good benefits, even for a non-profit. - The best training opportunities! Sooo many good trainings that are available and FREE to employees.

    Cons

    - Working for a non-profit will always have a slight disadvantage than a for profit, for all of the usual reasons. But our CEO does a good job of adjusting programming and structure to make sure employees and the families we serve are taken care of. There is transparency about income and spending, so that's comforting.

  2. "Highly stressful, but great initial experience for mental health careers"

    4.0
Current Employee - Residential Counselor II in San Diego, CA

I have been working at San Diego Center for Children part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Therapists and operations team value input. Lots of experience and a flexible schedule. Because of this was a great job to prepare for and do while in grad school. Team is supportive, sometimes you get to really feel like you made a difference for a kid, and you will have a lot of training in trauma-informed practices. This job will really force you to learn to deal with stress and think on your feet

    Cons

Low pay considering the work you put in. I started at 13 an hour and over 4 years have gotten an average of about a dollar a year raise. Very stressful at times, with many days being exhausting physically and mentally.

I have been working at San Diego Center for Children full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

-the wonderful and supportive people you meet and work alongside, but it’s far and few between

    Cons

-BLATANT favoritism -a leader who consults with a team of people rather than being able to decide for themselves -a hierarchy that makes ZERO sense -unauthentic and disingenuous individuals who do NOT have your best interest and are only out for themselves -non existent open door policy -management who plays by their own set of rules and guidelines; not leading by example and picking and choosing when they want to be professional -cliques and lots of them! -blurring the lines between personal and interpersonal relationships -zero transparency -management who can’t separate their personal feelings from professional situations -inability to create a safe platform for employees to openly and honestly vent with the fear of retaliation lingering over their heads

I worked at San Diego Center for Children full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Feels good to contribute to a worthy cause.

    Cons

Terrible Upper Management. Strongly advise against using "Open Door Policy." BOD should really review top management and consider why staff turnover is so high.
