I worked at San Diego Police Department full-time

    Pros

Pay is ok, pick your own gear, belt etc.

    Cons

Corrupted and vindictive supervisors. There are plenty of rogue officers who do more than just unethical things to get their way. There are some good cops too afraid to say anything.

    Neutral Outlook

I worked at San Diego Police Department full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Even though it pays the least of all the local departments, it's still a decent paying job. Lots of opportunities for specialty positions due to the size of the department.

    Cons

Horrible management. Many inconsistencies between how each division is run. Lots of cops breaking policies and doing unethical actions. You are more likely to get in trouble if you raise a concern about these actions versus actually being the violator. If you leave to go elsewhere, be prepared for the department to make it hard on you.

    Neutral Outlook

I have been working at San Diego Police Department full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Decent amount of autonomy compared to other departments. Pay is now competitive after 2018 raises.

    Cons

Department is understaffed at this time creating more pressure on current employees.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at San Diego Police Department full-time for more than a year

    Pros

9 divisions in the department offer good diversity. Can work extremely busy areas with high call volume, or high end residential areas with a slower pace. Good training available and several options to advance and work specialized units. Community is mostly supportive. Very team oriented.

    Cons

Pay is low but going up. Overall staffing is low, can sometimes be overwhelming in areas with high call volume.
