    Pros

    Working with talented volunteers. Generous benefits for a non-profit. I'm supposed to write 20 words but I won't. One, two, three more words.

    Cons

    Ego ego ego ego of senior management. Did I mention management's ego? Incongruent manager/employee matches. Too many meetings. SFAF proclaims they are all about the community but not their employees.

    Advice to Management

    Slash your own salaries in half. Run the organization seeing clients as HUMANS not as streams of revenue. Get rid of lifers in middle management. They stifle innovation.

    Pros

    The community of care providers is exceptional, as there is a sense of camaraderie and devotion toward our mission. This agency provides a good environment for building healthy community engagement skills. Great benefits!

    Cons

    It is a struggle for middle and upper management to balance the needs of the agency and the needs of the care providers. The executive team and board of directors are out of sync with the purported mission of the agency, which often effects the morale of the care providers.

    Advice to Management

    Spend a week shadowing a care provider, and learn.

    Pros

    Great mission not delivered.

    Cons

    When federally illegal activities are covered up it is hard for both the clients and the staff. Yet under Joe Hollendoner it is tolerated.

    Advice to Management

    Don't lie in interviews. Don't allow for your staff to be exposed to any kind of abuse without recourse.

    Pros

    Line staff will be surrounded by other passionate people who work very hard to help their target population. I found it easy to make friends. Insurance benefits were really good but were slowly being eroded. Also, free t-shirts.

    Cons

    Don't expect to move up. Ever. Or be compensated appropriately for the amount of effort and energy you'll put in. Unless...you're a white, pretty, affluent gay man - then maybe.

    Expect zero training. You will have to make up a bunch of useless 'performance improvement goals" each year that will in no way pertain to your position. If any of these involve outside classes or training that cost money, you'll get excessive push back or a flat 'no'. If you fail to complete those goals, you won't receive your 'merit' raise. There's no COLA here, so your 'merit' raise, which will be abysmally lower than a standard COLA will mean that each year, you'll work for less money than the previous one. The CEO, however, will get a $40k raise.

    You'll have more than one boss and they will give you conflicting information. Expect to be berated if you confront them about this.

    You will end up in awkward, inappropriate situations which HR will do nothing about.

    Advice to Management

    Hire from within. If none of your employees are qualified to take over for an open position, you're doing it wrong.

    Pros

    San Francisco AIDS Foundation has a great staff and a fun community. The Foundation is doing great work in the field. The Foundation offers wonderful benefits and is located in a commute friendly location.

    Cons

    The Foundation is highly political which makes it hard to create change. As with any non-profit, budgets are slim which leaves employees burnt out working long hours.

    Advice to Management

    Trust your employees and empower them to make decisions. Invest in programs and new initiatives. Get rid of the toxic politically charged environment.

    Pros

    The programs, despite terrible leadership, thrive and do good work for the communities served.

    Cons

    Poor leadership from the top on down. Petulant, back-stabbing managers and directors ready to throw anyone under the buss for their own benefit. Totally lacking empathy for the clients and front-line staff. Benefits package was once stellar but through mismanagement and bungled expansion they have suffered greatly. Pay is sub-par considering the duties assigned. Stay away from admin jobs those roles are treated like dirt.

    Advice to Management

    Get rid of bloated, ineffectual leadership (joke) team before real damage is done and loose the entailed, vindictive managers that have been hired recently. Things may change with a new CEO but it looks highly doubtful.

    Pros

    The programs of SFAF are doing absolutely amazing work and you feel the reward from that daily. The people and volunteers are compassionate and easy to work with. It was a very relaxed work environment. Pay is competitive for a non-profit depending on the role.

    Cons

    Politics and usual. The upper management doesn't listen to the advice of the programs that actually provide the services to clients. This is how the health center ended up being rebranded as "Strut", which no one who works there wanted.

    Pros

    Amazing services, wonderful and intelligent staff, cutting edge AIDS research on the ground level, great benefits, and decent salary for a nonprofit.

    Cons

    Sometimes overwhelming, little ability to move up, very political, little comradely between departments, and the bathroom can be awful.

    Advice to Management

    Develop ways to make staff feel important and hear by upper management. Develop feedback loops. Stay mission and client driven.

    Pros

    Great starting salary. Great line staff to work with. Agency has honorable mission statement.

    Cons

    Line staff has not had a raise in at least seven years while the board granted the CEO a $40, 000 increase plus bonus.

    Advice to Management

    Show appreciation for line staff with at least a cost of living increase. Loyalty needs to be rewarded. Line staff fulfill the contracts.
