I worked at San Joaquin Valley College full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I received extensive training on policies and procedures. You had to come to the position with interpersonal skills

    Cons

There was a high turnover of employees. I was often overworked and underpaid. You are promised a pay scale that gets changed whenever they want. I was not adequately paid for working my 2-year stint.

    Advice to Management

Get to know your employees and don't treat employees or prospective students as just a number.

I worked at San Joaquin Valley College full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

It's a job, you can pay your bills.

    Cons

Nepotism occurs from the campus level to corporate. If you are able to listen and not react or provide an opinion, you'll love this place!

    Advice to Management

Stay true to your mission statement. Treat others as you want to be treated. Positive reinforcement goes a lot further than threats of - "California is an at will state" and "now that Trump is President, the gainful employment act will be diminished, we'll be back to business and you may find yourself out of a job."

    Pros

SJVC is a family run institution, in it for the right reasons. The senior management makes decisions with "what's best for the student" always in the forefront. SJVC invests in its employees with extensive training, coaching, and ongoing learning opportunities. If you've got a heart for students, this is the right place for you!

    Cons

The only con is that the regulatory environment, designed to eliminate bad players in the for-profit industry, is also negatively impacting good players like SJVC. Regulations continue to make the job more challenging.

    Advice to Management

Continue to invest in the people!

I worked at San Joaquin Valley College full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Coworkers were great to work with, a very fun group of people. These people are the reason why online is as successful as they are, not management.

    Cons

Negative hostile environment, management needs training on how to treat employees. No trust and very unprofessional. Employees call out all the time cause of stress. High turnover and no room for growth.

    Advice to Management

An annual review should be conducted by employees on who they report to. Their salary or raises should reflect on their leadership skills, they should be held accountable for their actions just as we are for ours.

I have been working at San Joaquin Valley College full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great family atmosphere and the school generally cares about the students' success in the field. Despite the negative reviews For-Profit Schools get in the press and from politicians, SJVC is committed to stay above the fray and not do anything that would look bad.

    Cons

Benefits and salary are below industry levels for our profession. Some students are graduating into jobs that pay the same as what the instructors are being paid.

    Advice to Management

Instructors are hired as content experts, they should be compensated as content experts or you lose them to their chosen industry. Students suffer every time a new instructor is brought in.
