I worked at San José State University full-time

    Pros

Coworkers were helpful for the most part.

    Cons

Manager was very demanding and is no longer in that job. No training provided. Paid for an item to fix the problem and they refused reimbursement and did not return the item. This was elevated without success. Tried to offset it with something that was owed them and they short paid a state tax refund to recover the money. Stay away from this place.

    Advice to Management

Provide traning on purchasing items for San Jose State.

I worked at San José State University full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Trying to move fast and get a lot of new things done in a short time. Much faster paced than other CSUs.

    Cons

There are some managers and staff in important positions that do not have the technical knowledge or skills to perform their jobs and cause a lot of turmoil and grief. Because of their status or tenure, management is reluctant to deal with them appropriately.

    Advice to Management

Identify poor performers or people in over their heads, especially those in management, and deal with them. Find them a new appropriate placement or encourage them to leave.

I have been working at San José State University full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

It is located in the downtonw San Jose and it is relatively safe place.

    Cons

Salary for assitant professor is humiliating. Absolute value would be similar to other schools but if you consider living expences of Bay Area, it is very close to the poverty level. If you do not have anyone who are making additional money in your familly,, you will not be able to sustain your family with the salary that SJSU provides.

    Advice to Management

Do not get too much excited even if you found a job here. Maybe it would be good place if you have a clear plan to move on to other schools later.

I worked at San José State University full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The best thing about working here is the one on one contact with students.

    Cons

The leadership is horrible. It's a very dysfunctional department and has been for many years. You'd be lucky if you were ever treated with respect and kindness from any one of your upper management leaders - and most of your co-workers. It's very prison like, if that makes sense. Move on, and find somewhere else to work. You will not be happy here.

    Advice to Management

Be nice to people and stop promoting a culture of separatism , negativity and hatred. The overall morale here has been fractured for several years, and no one has done anything to try and fix that. It' s department that allows it's managers to be rude and excessively controlling (read micro management) at will.

I have been working at San José State University full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

it is a stable job with good benefits but that is about all.

    Cons

too many managers, most managers are incompetent, dishonest, lazy, and way over paid. union not helpful in protecting staff against harassment from managers. HR works with managers to harass staff. Some faculty do not care about students education. Huge waste of taxpayer money by managers. Bad managers cause lawsuits that should be avoided by disciplining managers instead of HR helping the harassment and blaming the staff victims. Work can be monotonous.

    Advice to Management

Hire competent managers who care about the university and its staff instead of their own personal political goals.

    Pros

Better than being unemployed and you can take up to 6 units at SJSU without paying tuition.

    Cons

Politics. You need to play it or you are out. HR who are supposed to be your side sides with management. So, when you make any complain t, your supervisor probably will know it.

    Advice to Management

Please don't play politics with your employees in lower range. Provide opportunities for new employees to express their ideas and bring new blood on the table.

    Pros

In San Jose, silicon valley. Some professors care about the students success. There seems to be a lot of Job opportunities.

    Cons

Most professor do not care about the students well being. Most are smart and intelligent but are not good communicators or teachers.

    Advice to Management

Need to hire more young professors, or professors who care about the students learning success.

I have been working at San José State University full-time

    Pros

Offers good benefits and a significant discount for grad school.

    Cons

    -Over worked/ under appreciated,
-Majority of every department's work environment has low morale
    -Underpaid
-Rarely have any opportunities for a promotion or salary raise.
    -Very demanding
    -No sense of career growth
-A lot of departmental conflicts between different departments.

    Advice to Management

-Please pay/treat your employees better rather than taking a $100k raise for your self.
-Have department managers lead by example to motivate employees.
-Implement real training rather than online/video training quizzes for older employees to be up to date with current evolving technology.
-Focus on educating students to become great ,respectful, and intellectual students. Rather than focusing on the general campus resume to sell admission numbers. The next generation of working adults brings me great concern.
