I have been working at San Mateo County full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Personable management and coworkers, great and brilliant team of regulators to gain knowledge from. Good benefits. People know how to utilize proper channels of communication. Company encourages team building and solidarity among employees.

    Cons

Retirement program at the latest tier, have less to offer compared to the previous tiers for employees who were hired much earlier on. Smaller-scale of employees so some departments have to multi-task which reduce time spent on actual core tasks.

    Advice to Management

Please keep up with the system of listening to your staff workers and valuing what they have to say, it helps build and strengthen trust amongst everyone.

    Pros

Great place to work. The offer a great work/life balance. They offer a ton of training opportunities. They recently held a Career Day for staff which shows they take career opportunities serious.

    Cons

Sometimes it can be hard to engage with staff from other departments but this is true in many big organizations.

I have been working at San Mateo County full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

good benefits. Some departments offer flex schedules (i.e. 9 hours a day and you get every other Monday off etc. ) Pay is average compared to Santa Clara county and San Francisco county.

    Cons

Lots of politics in the department that I am working. All management care about is claiming credits and they are not willing to take responsibility for any negative outcome. Line staff have to to tip toe to avoid being scapegoated. Exercising due diligence and staying technically competent does not mean you will get ahead. Instead, you may be penalized with more work while those who brag about the micro- tasks that they do and are willing to do Apple polishing get a lift in the helicopter. It is always about who you know and not what you know. Not the place to stay if you want to grow professionally.

    Advice to Management

Stop hiring math major & sociology major and expect them to know accounting. There are reason why colleges offer accounting degrees. Those who can talk does not mean they can perform. Cherish the people who can deliver without making a lot of noise. Hiring talkers/ apple polishers who cannot perform ( and giving them a free pass due to double standard) kills morale.

I worked at San Mateo County (More than 10 years)

    Pros

County people are great to work with. Made a lot of friends. Good Benefits. Lifetime pension if you make it.

    Cons

Worked 7 days a week with no appreciation for the hours that I put in. Note: these were unpaid hours after 8/9 hours. Upper management don't know a thing but take all the credit for the work done. They don't know their jobs and are unqualified for their positions. They got in because they know someone/somebody. They sit on their butts all day and do no work. They have no regards for staff who do an excellent job and they give promotions to their friends. The hiring system is rigged.

    Advice to Management

Get qualified people to work in the county. Most staff just go in for their paychecks and benefits. Listen to employees who have put in 20+ years and have experience in finance and business. Quit hiring folks that have English degrees and expect them to do finance. They don't know a thing and all they want to do is get someone else to do their jobs and they will take the credit. Taking shortcuts to get the work done will bite you in the behind when the auditors show up.
