    No opinion of CEO

    I have been working at San Mateo County full-time

    Pros

    Working outside in nature, the pay is good, retirement is good, benefits are good. Leadership at my level is good. They are smart people with good common sense.

    Cons

    cleaning bathrooms can be nasty, work is physically demanding. Lots of public interaction and opinions vary so it's not always good interactions.

    Advice to Management

    spend more time in the field.

    I have been working at San Mateo County full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    The County offers a healthy benefits package, flexible work schedules, and encourages and supports a hefty amount of professional development opportunities.

    Cons

    There is a clear delineation between line staff and management. Line staff feel that the organization is management-heavy; and management tends to meet and operate in somewhat of a silo, which leads to distrust among line staff.

    Advice to Management

    Keep encouraging professional development, but make management and their meetings (i.e. meeting minutes, etc.) more transparent. This will lead to staff feeling more supported and equal.

    Pros

    SMC is forward thinking in a lot aspects. As an organization they do many things right. They,
    promote (and in many places embody) responsive government;
    focus on serving the public in effective and efficient ways;
    strive to create a prosperous, safe, collaborative, healthy, safe and livable community;
    encourage Work-Life (blend/balance); and
    champion employee engagement, development, wellness and performance.

    Cons

    While the County may promote and believe in all of the above, many Departments are left to their own devices, and may not adopt all or many of the above. In addition, there are also challenges working in an environment where employees may be geographically and organizationally / departmentally disparate.

    I worked at San Mateo County part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    It was a great opportunity to learn new skills and really help people who were having a difficult time, whether it was dealing with a bad financial stretch or attempting to apply for benefits through Social Security. Great co-workers as well.

    Cons

    The information one has to learn about all of the rules governing Social Security can be incredibly overwhelming, and the learning curve is quite high. It is a lot of procedural things one must learn.

    Advice to Management

    I would advise more time training with more experienced staff, as it can be very intimidating taking on some of the cases by oneself. Additionally, more supervision would be very helpful.

    I have been working at San Mateo County full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    This is a great county to work for! The management is very supportive, my colleagues are very friendly, knowledgeable, and have a great sense of humor, and, for the most part, everyone is very helpful. My direct supervisor is also very supportive, which I've found to be incredibly important when doing intensive clinical work. Also, you can use the county cars if you're going into the community for work! I highly recommend working here.

    Cons

    There's a lot of bureaucracy since it's the county, so sometimes things take longer to do because of that, and sometimes communication from management is a bit slow. And while the pay is very good compared to the nonprofit agencies out here, given the high cost of living out here, I wish it was a bit higher (though, I guess that's more a complaint about the out of control housing costs up here). But compared to other places I've worked out, this place is a dream!
