    I worked at San Mateo County (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    County people are great to work with. Made a lot of friends. Good Benefits. Lifetime pension if you make it.

    Cons

    Worked 7 days a week with no appreciation for the hours that I put in. Note: these were unpaid hours after 8/9 hours. Upper management don't know a thing but take all the credit for the work done. They don't know their jobs and are unqualified for their positions. They got in because they know someone/somebody. They sit on their butts all day and do no work. They have no regards for staff who do an excellent job and they give promotions to their friends. The hiring system is rigged.

    Advice to Management

    Get qualified people to work in the county. Most staff just go in for their paychecks and benefits. Listen to employees who have put in 20+ years and have experience in finance and business. Quit hiring folks that have English degrees and expect them to do finance. They don't know a thing and all they want to do is get someone else to do their jobs and they will take the credit. Taking shortcuts to get the work done will bite you in the behind when the auditors show up.

    Pros

    A great county to work for. We all had one purpose, to serve the public to the best of our abilities. My colleagues had the best intentions and were always willing to pitch in wherever needed to serve the diverse population.

    Cons

    The #1 reason I left was the inability to move up in the administrative realm.

    Advice to Management

    More opportunities for current employees to build their career upward.

    I have been working at San Mateo County full-time

    Pros

    New management respects work/life balance. Staff is professional and easy to work with especially when collaborating on projects or tasks. Supportive of learning. Provides tuition reimbursement, offers training classes and has community college partnership.

    Cons

    New management also means learning curve and indecision or lack of clear directions. It could be frustrating going in one direction then having to redo the work.

    Some times the wrong people are recognized for the work that is done.

    Advice to Management

    Work on confidence in making decisions and providing good directions.

    I worked at San Mateo County (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    The employees are great and the pension is wonderful.

    Cons

    Did not offer breaks to Group Supervisor III's at Camp Glenwood (probation department). It is practice for every other position at this facility to get offered daily breaks.

    Advice to Management

    This is against the law and you all know about it so fix it.

    Pros

    I got to work at a polling station and see an election in progress while also making sure that it ran smoothly. It was only a one day commitment for each event.

    Cons

    Follow-up was difficult. Finding ways to stay involved and working in the next set of elections was difficult.

    Advice to Management

    Alert past workers about upcoming election employment opportunities. This would help retain well trained members and also prevent a lack of help on election day.

    Positive Outlook

    Pros

    SMC is forward thinking in a lot aspects. As an organization they do many things right. They,
    promote (and in many places embody) responsive government;
    focus on serving the public in effective and efficient ways;
    strive to create a prosperous, safe, collaborative, healthy, safe and livable community;
    encourage Work-Life (blend/balance); and
    champion employee engagement, development, wellness and performance.

    Cons

    While the County may promote and believe in all of the above, many Departments are left to their own devices, and may not adopt all or many of the above. In addition, there are also challenges working in an environment where employees may be geographically and organizationally / departmentally disparate.
