I worked at San Mateo - Foster City School District full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Excellent place to work. Great principal and assistant principal. Excellent District Office personnel. All very easy to talk to and get questions answered.

    Cons

The school calendar changes from year-to-year. It's a hybrid of year-long and traditional. The teachers vote on the calendar every year.

    Advice to Management

    Excellent Management

I worked at San Mateo - Foster City School District (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I spent 5 years at two great schools, and 1 year at a struggling school, all in the SMFC school district. Great training, great teaching materials, great "pitch" at interviews. Pay schedules and benefits are better than comparable teaching positions. Some schools in the district are definitely 5 stars. My ratings are based on a struggling school, and an unbelievably hard experience. I hope this review can be helpful to future teachers.

    Cons

The schools across the district are not consistent. One school may have a staff that cares about students and has a very dynamic and supportive "team" philosophy. 5 miles away, however, the neighboring school values are completely different. Be careful when interviewing- what is your job description? Will you be pulled as a sub instead of doing your given position? The staff of a school can make your life wonderful, or actually ruin you. Pick your school carefully. Is there high turn-over? Do the teachers hang in groups, and put other groups of teachers down, speaking in degrading terms? Is the principal a strong leader?

    Advice to Management

Substitute teachers are substitute teachers. Veteran specialists are not the subs. One exception becomes the norm. Support new teachers by providing mentors in the school. Principals should form diverse teaching teams in each grade level to share expertise.

    Pros

Great salary. Generally a good team of helpful principals. Professional development has been good the last couple of years in particular.

    Cons

Don't be vulnerable with struggles. It will come back to bite you. Remain professional at all times avoiding anything more than professional friendships.
