I have been working at San Ysidro Health Center full-time

    Pros

An Executive Team that cares about the mission--bringing affordable health care to underprivileged people. Leadership and HR is motivated in improving the organization which has grown at a terrific rate:
Founded in 1969 with just one clinic.
    2001 - 4 clinics and about 200 employees
    2011 - 8 clinics and about 600 employees
    2017 - 14 clinics and a dozen additional sites -- about 1250 employees

    Benefits are phenomenal.
Throughout the organization people really seem to enjoy their teams.
Employee Engagement Events regularly with a massive year-end party in 2016.

    Cons

As a non-profit, base salaries are lower than hospitals in the area. They do what they can to show appreciation in other ways, and the pension plan is fantastic for long-term employees.

    Advice to Management

Keep encouraging training and develop career track programs for top-performing employees. Stay true to the mission and continue to grow!

I worked at San Ysidro Health Center full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    OK for gaining experience
    Good first time employment opportunity
    Mission statement is admirable

    Cons

    >Mid- and upper management plays favorites; some employees were castigated for the same things that were overlooked when "favorites" did them
    >Non-Hispanics are ignored or treated with disrespect
    >Hourly employees are underappreciated, underpaid (no bonuses for hourly paid staff!)
    >Efforts to improve employee relations/productivity were for appearances sake, only. No lasting changes were effected (perhaps because methods used were meaningless)

    Advice to Management

    Respect every employee.
Recognize that praise for a job well done belongs more to employees than to managers.
Remember that praise should be public, but correction should be private!
