I have been working at Sandler O'Neill full-time

    Pros

Sandler O'Neill is a great firm to work for. People here are really top notch.

    Cons

    Not much to say really

    Pros

People are very nice and easy to work with; "Coach" runs an incredible intern program with a fantastic speaker series. You will learn more from him than from anyone else you ever meet in your life, outside of maybe your parents.

    Cons

Because of the small staff and small internship class, work is oftentimes unstructured and therefore can be hard to come by at times. Nonetheless, you are still expected to stay in the office very late, even if you don't have any work to do.

    Advice to Management

Try to organize the actual work part of the internship better - there were too many times where I had no work and was just sitting there waiting to do something.

    I worked at Sandler O'Neill full-time

    Pros

Pay is OK, seems to be good company outside of IT

    Cons

CTO has no idea what he's doing, "manages" (if I can even use the term) reactively and by fear only. Micro manages IT as if we were an assembly line at a factory, does not invest in training and there is absolutely no work from home (only if doing overtime) even though that is not the case for the company as a whole

    Advice to Management

    Get rid of him

I have been working at Sandler O'Neill full-time

    Pros

This is an excellent firm to work at. Everyone - for the most part - is very friendly and collegial. It is a great place to start your career because - while you will work hard - good work will be rewarded and promoted from within. It is a best in breed boutique.

    Cons

It is a small firm, so resources can - at times - be constrained. It can be a somewhat political environment.

    Pros

Amazing place that has a culture that has a great history and culture. Very smart people and you get so much experience right away.

    Cons

Same downsides of any small company. Not a big deal.

    Positive Outlook

I worked at Sandler O'Neill full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Firm has a strong niche in the community banking space.

    Cons

Difficult to be a fixed income institutional sales person because the firm commits no capital to the space. If you don't have rock solid relationships your production will suffer.

    Advice to Management

Do a better job of reviewing and managing institutional accounts, especially amongst the total rate of return sales force.

    Pros

Great work atmosphere and really nice people. Everybody is happy to help and you can approach upper management. Really good culture and people treat each other like family.

    Cons

It is small so there isn't as much of a formal internship process. You have to be able to find your own work and be able to ask people for their time or help.

    Advice to Management

I would advise management to set up a better mentorship program for the interns. Or make the program rotational, so that you get exposure to different things.

I have been working at Sandler O'Neill full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

higher and all cash pay since they just bumped everyone up. lots of great relationships and people. lots of deal flow experience. very strong and good reputation

    Cons

sometimes smaller firm is good and sometimes bad for the obvious reasons. not much name recognition outside of what the bank does (even though sandler is a top performer year after year since it is a niche bank)

    Advice to Management

keep things above the competitive wall street range and you will keep on bringing and keeping the best talent and improving your name.

I worked at Sandler O'Neill (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Fun people, good office comraderie

    Cons

Limited growth, no organized training for new graduates

    Advice to Management

Work on training new analyst and investment of staff. No clear line of command could also have stronger human resources.
