    Pros

Being a part of meaningful, cutting edge, life changing research. This is a great place to learn, take what you can from your time here, but don't waste too many years!

    Cons

Academia.....Upper management is so focused on what looks good on paper (what degree and where you attended school ) that they fail to recognize or celebrate true talent if it's not backed up by a certificate . Additionally there is horrible communication all around and good raises typically do not happen even with a great performance review.

    Advice to Management

Somethings got to change and it starts at the top. I would encourage management to take a close look at the overall climate of the Institute as a whole...are the employees happy? Not just the researchers, but your lab assistants, admins, animal care workers, and maintenence workers etc. If most were honest, I believe, they would say no. It's how you treat all employees that shows your worth as an employer....the top dogs as well as the little people and SBMRI falls quite short.

I worked at Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great facilities, excellent scientists, small and comfortable buildings, decent salaries, convenient location, excellent weather!

    Cons

Lack of guidance in so many labs, people don't matter, solely publication oriented, no credit given even to the most fruitful, complete lack of culture, values and social life.

    Advice to Management

Start caring for the postdocs and they will care for the science! One BBQ a year is not called a social life.

    Pros

Exciting to be at a company doing promising research, 401(k) plan can't be beat

    Cons

The administrative departments (marketing, development, finance, etc.) are an afterthought at best. Most of them are relegated to an ugly building way down the street from the labs, where morale is abysmal. Many people in these departments have never even met the CEO or had a tour of the campus. One guy in development who has been there many years seems to call the shots about who is hired and fired. People live in fear of being laid off for arbitrary reasons while people who do next to nothing get promoted.

    Advice to Management

Integrate administration with the science side better, and get someone to oversee admin who will boost morale and reward hard work.
