I have been working at Sanford C. Bernstein full-time

    Pros

Great brand for your resume, experience doing truly in-depth research with very smart and knowledgeable people. Good way to get your name seen by potential buy-side employers. Fairly stable employment environment, layoffs are rare.

    Cons

Relationship with your senior analyst is very important - the teams are very small (like, 3 people). Most senior analyst hires are lateral, rather than associate promotions (although those do happen).

    Advice to Management

I don't have much advice for management. The sell-side industry faces long term pressure because more and more of the buy side is moving to algorithmic management, and sell-side research is aimed at human managers, not machines.

  2. "Grueling hours and hierarchical, but a fit for some"

I have been working at Sanford C. Bernstein full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good stepping stone to the buy side
Good name for resume if you want to do public investing
Senior staff is paid reasonably well

    Cons

Pay Is average for the long hours worked
    Little job independence
Limited resources and cost focus make the job more difficult than it needs to be
No training for fresh grads like bulge bracket banks have

    Advice to Management

Recognize employees with promotions - it costs nothing and would improve retention
Let associates manage their own responsibilities
Provide resources for employees to be successful

I have been working at Sanford C. Bernstein full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Really intelligent people across both research and sales groups lead to endlessly engaging, intellectual work for associates. Analysts are approachable and thoughtful, and are more apt to sleep under their desk to finish up a tough report rather than save it for the next day. This is best-in-class training for those that want to learn how to think about stocks and go into hedge funds. Pay is above average, benefits are good.

    Cons

Associates rarely become analysts, so their is little upward mobility. Analysts are typically specialists in their industry (operators, PhDs, consultants) before coming on board. Hours are very long, and tough. Associates take the brunt of the work load, and their is a constant flow of it.

    Advice to Management

    More possibility for upward mobility.

People are amazingly helpful and very willing to train you. There is a great sense of community there and you can make genuine friends within the workplace.

    Cons

Limited paths of growth, and if you are not interested in following those specific paths this may not be the place for you. Not much interaction between teams professionally.
