    I have been working at Sanger Institute full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Amazing facilities and resources (especially for computing); very talented and motivated individuals; good work-life balance (people generally leave around 5.30pm and you're not expected to work weekends, unless there's a deadline); senior faculty are very approachable, generally there's a lot less 'ego' than I would have expected at such a top research institute

    Cons

    Sanger's remote location and the lack of a train connection make flexible working difficult, unless you have a car. On the other hand, the shuttle buses to town are free and it can be nice to cycle to work in spring or summer, if you enjoy a bit of exercise.

    Advice to Management

    Would be great to get a shuttle bus once or twice a day to one of the nearby train stations.

    The best place to work in human population and disease genomics. A world class facility with excellent faculty and funding.

    I have been working at Sanger Institute as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Great place to work in, beautiful campus with a huge range of facilities available. The atmosphere is very relaxed and friendly.

    Cons

    The management is very cold and doesn't really care about the people. The HR departament is a joke and everything which takes a day to do takes them weeks and usually with errors.

    I have been working at Sanger Institute full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    A lot of really clever people with fantastic scientific resources.

    Cons

    Located in the middle of no where, with very limited transportation. Makes doing wet-science almost impossible if you don't have a car.

    Advice to Management

    Establish frequent busing throughout the day (and especially on weekends).

    I have been working at Sanger Institute part-time

    Pros

    * Collegiate, academic working environment
    * Challenging, exciting projects on the cutting edge
    * Very collaborative environment, both internally and with other institutions / organisations / companies
    * Relatively low pressure
    * Flexible working conditions
    * Within constraint of contract type (fixed term or permanent) positions tend to be secure.

    Cons

    * Salaries not at commercial levels, but that's reasonable as this is an academic institute.

    Cons

    I have been working at Sanger Institute full-time

    Pros

    It is a great working place and environment and facilities for science. Interesting and smart colleagues.

    Cons

    The campus is located in quite a very quiet area, outside Cambridge City, so commuting to work can be inconvenient, plus there is not much in the neighbourhood if you want to enjoy a nice lunch out or coffee with friends. Low salary and no promotional opportunity.
