I worked at Sanger Institute full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Highly collaborative and friendly atmosphere, several opportunities for personal and professional development, well served with daycare, ATM, gym facilities, several extracurricular activities, clean, beautiful campus, very efficient and productive environment.

    Cons

The site is out of town; not very accessible other than by the shuttle bus or by personal car, working hours less flexible, food on site is quite expensive!

I have been working at Sanger Institute full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Its a very beautiful campus with great benefits. In particular the extras like health insurance, death inservice, good pension (changed for new people), 10 days paid leave for looking after sick kids, 2 days paid leave for volunteering, and up to 30 days holidays. The fundamental ethos to give away data, papers, and software gives a great feel good factor that money cant buy. CEO is a great singer.

    Cons

Poor salaries for the area, in fact they arent even competitive with other organisations and companies on the same campus.
Its far out from Cambridge which means a daily commute.

    Advice to Management

Increase salaries to be competitive with other scientific organisations in the local area.

I worked at Sanger Institute full-time

    Pros

Good pension schema. Great working environment. Good research place for people coming from abroad.

    Cons

No chance to have career. They prefer to hire new people than give promotions. The salary is not competitive and the benefits are not fitting the needs of the IT employees.

    Advice to Management

    Review your career and salary

I worked at Sanger Institute part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great campus atmosphere and work-life balance.
    Excellent facilities.
Encouraged to attend conferences & social clubs e.g. 5-a-side, touch rugby, etc.

    Cons

Some instances of silo mentality creeping in.
Emphasis placed on experience of externally-recruited senior management rather than fit.

    Advice to Management

Consider cross-functional integration to mitigate silo mentality.

I have been working at Sanger Institute full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - Amazing environment, facilities and benefits
    - Friendly and hugely intelligent people doing amazing work
    - Flexible, not overly stressed workplace
    - Lots of role autonomy, ability to suggest new ideas, take ownership etc

    Cons

    - Expensive but nice eateries/cafes on site

    Advice to Management

Seem to be putting many new initiatives in place, all to make the workplace even better - so keep up the good work!

I have been working at Sanger Institute full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Amazing facilities and resources (especially for computing); very talented and motivated individuals; good work-life balance (people generally leave around 5.30pm and you're not expected to work weekends, unless there's a deadline); senior faculty are very approachable, generally there's a lot less 'ego' than I would have expected at such a top research institute

    Cons

Sanger's remote location and the lack of a train connection make flexible working difficult, unless you have a car. On the other hand, the shuttle buses to town are free and it can be nice to cycle to work in spring or summer, if you enjoy a bit of exercise.

    Advice to Management

Would be great to get a shuttle bus once or twice a day to one of the nearby train stations.

I have been working at Sanger Institute full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The best place to work in human population and disease genomics. A world class facility with excellent faculty and funding.

    Cons

Lmited opportunities for career progression for staff and low number of independent fellowships for non-faculty members.
