I worked at Sanlam full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Sanlam has a strong culture of support among the advisors and staff and a very wide range of products to market to clients. The Bluestar business model is a great model for advisors who have an entrepreneurial spirit and have the desire to build a business.

    Cons

Sanlam Financial Advisors are salespeople for the company and they are expected to sell products. As such Sanlam places hefty sales targets on the advisors that force them to sell products that are profitable to Sanlam rather than beneficial to the client. They further provide training, but no support for advisors back office and administration functions and often the advisors then get caught up in doing administrative functions rather than spending time on selling the products.

    Advice to Management

Employ office staff within the branches to do the administration for the advisors so as to ease the administrative burden of the advisors. This will enable them to spend more time on marketing rather than doing admin duties.

    Pros

Good long-standing company that does good work, very client-centric.

    Cons

Very old school, not very concerned about internal staff development that is relevant to to industry.

    Advice to Management

Allow staff to choose own training path, allow for better advancement, and be more aware of rating staff.

I have been working at Sanlam (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - Very good work atmosphere where everyone is friendly
    - Access to management to get updates on company performance
    - Well-defined operational processes
    - Bonus payments are really good on a good year

    Cons

    - Tends to fall behind with salary if you stay too long
    - Goes through cycles (months) of chaos during project implementations
    - 'Lessons learnt' are merely written down and filed. We'' make the same mistakes the next time
    - Red tape makes innovation very difficult and leads to people not getting the exposure to get their hands on new technology

    Advice to Management

We need to actively get a program in place where people can learn and the skills can grow. Not the current PDP...
