I worked at Santa Catalina Island Company part-time

    Pros

Great management, great workers. The job is strict, yet lots of fun. Great views, atmosphere and great customers.

    Cons

Overtime many weeks, but one is easily able to earn alot of extra money. Have to live on the island. No benefits.

    Pros

Supportive for moving up and wanting to help employees reach their goals. Lots of hours and busy, especially in Summer.

    Cons

Can be hard to work as a team when not everyone is on the same page. Plus it's a small place and some people can get things since everyone knows everyone.

    Advice to Management

Maybe a bit more time training, but otherwise it was a good place to work.

The company has a great visual for their future and what they hope to grow the company in to!

    Cons

Communication could be tricky between the two office locations.

    Disapproves of CEO

I worked at Santa Catalina Island Company full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great owners... Geoff and Alison Rusack are dedicated to their vision. The island has a huge potential to grow and become an amazing place. The development team is amazing. They have competitive pay and offer housing solutions if your position requires you to live on the island.

    Cons

The company has a horrible working environment. The CEO and VP's play heavy favorites and lie to each other to make themselves look good. A lot of smoke and mirrors are being used and if you don't agree and follow in line with the rest, they'll let you go. There's a reason most of the people who live in Avalon hate the Island Company. They are shady. You won't feel safe working here. The locals aren't innocent either! They pretend to be your friend to get the inside gossip from you, and then they whisper behind your back. It's like being back in high school all over again.

    Advice to Management

    1) Stop believing the stories being told to you and experience it for yourself. 2) If your employees are failing, it's because you haven't given them the tools to succeed. The reason you burn through so many employees is because your management is terrible. 3) You can't keeping doing the same old and tired things and expect different outcomes. Get up to speed with the times on all levels!

I worked at Santa Catalina Island Company (More than a year)

    Pros

Wide variety of projects. Challenges unique to remote island location so job always interesting.

    Cons

Only Vice Presidents and up receive bonuses. Everyone else receivsd nothing. President & owners are cold and uncaring. Benefit package has been whittled away over the years down to just vacation. No annual pay increases. Cost of living on Catalina is exorbitant. No rentals available. Due to drought, 50% water rationing is in effect for everyone. Cost of utilities, water, fuel, and groceries are outrageously high.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of negative attitude and current CEO/President and treat employees like human beings (like you used to do when Mr. Wrigley was alive and running things). Warning: You can never, ever please the owners.

    Pros

beautiful place to live for work.

    Cons

highly shady and political work place. be extremely careful working here.

    Advice to Management

    Pros

Really enjoyed interning here. Good experience across the board and got to participate in all meetings with upper management. Very flexible and understanding when requesting days off. Very approachable team and VP of Marketing (my director) was great! Get to make trips to Catalina when needed (about once a week).

    Cons

The company culture is a little older, mid 30s-40s.

    Advice to Management

    Great job.

    Pros

Room for advancement, weekly meetings to insure everyone had the same information, brainstorming, respect for external as well as internal customers. We were encouraged to "think out of the box" and accountability for our division.

    Cons

Living on the island is expensive and you must plan your trips to the mainland for shopping, Dr.appointments, etc very carefully. Also, when our President of the company retired, his replacement was from the mainland and did not understand the ways of the island or the islanders. We had to learn and embrace the transition of mainland style work ethics as well as trying to connect to new brands that we were not taught as we grew with the company. This turn over was at a high energy level and there was no time for us to try to adjust and understand all the new concepts from the CEO, CCO,CMO etc. Although we did learn to accept new ways and new ideas and for the most part most employees did adjust.

    Advice to Management

Talk to the employees because it was very common for employees to have worked at the company 15, 25, or 30 years. There was waisted time with what they thought were new ideas however most of the ideas were already tried previously and we could of explained why it did not work. It would have been advantageous for new management to work with the original management.

I worked at Santa Catalina Island Company full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Housing on Catalina Island came with the job and was automatically deducted from paycheck which was great not to worry abotu rent. Some really great, knowledgeable people work there.

    Cons

Leadership is all over the place, the company is constantly shifting people around jobs so real connections can't be made within work teams.

    Advice to Management

Stop trying to turn Catalina Island into Rodeo Drive in one fell swoop - it's annoying the locals and creating a bad atmosphere
