I worked at Santa Clara Valley Water full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Fair, reasonable 8 hour work days; the tasks to be completed are moderate: you have your main tasks and a bunch of smaller tasks that work around the main ones. Friendly supervisors and employees, sound facilities (at the water treatment plants and the main offices on Almaden Expwy), pretty good benefits, competitive pay.

    Cons

Can be noisy in the pumping areas of the water treatment plants, some of the plant properties are large walking distances, traveling between plants and offices may take 20-45 min per trip.

    Pros

    Nice people, good working conditions.

    Cons

960 hour limit per FY per contractor.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the 960 hour hour per fiscal year contractor rule and allow good employees to role over to a perm position.

    Pros

    friendly, great benefits, nice location.

    Cons

promotion are done by tenure not skills, bias tends to run rampant.

    Advice to Management

The District and its mission are critical to the health of Santa Clara County. Therefore, the District should give more attention to stomping-out internal Bureaucracy and power struggles.

I worked at Santa Clara Valley Water full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Salary (for my position), excellent health and retirement benefits, decent boss.

    Cons

Cube farm. Very political, with lots of rumors, gossip, back-stabbing, buck-passing, etc. Bureaucratic hell. Bloated, with lots of dead weight and very few stars. Nobody seems happy to be there. Lots of "silos".

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees with respect. Put the right people in the right positions. Deal with problem employees appropriately (i.e. get rid of the dead weight). Recognize and reward those who excel. Do your job.
