I have been working at Santa Monica Malibu School District full-time

    Pros

Some students are deeply engaged. Some parents are deeply devoted to their child's education. It is a very safe area. There are a lot of different kinds of students from a wide variety of backgrounds.

    Cons

Administrative turnover is crazy. There have been 7 principals in the last two decades, not counting interim principals. There is little consistency between the houses. Custodial services leave a lot to be desired. Tehre are a lot of budgetary concerns and bureaucratic nonesense.

I have been working at Santa Monica Malibu School District full-time

    Pros

District employees are friendly and easy to contact.
Transparency in some departments makes job way easier.
At school sites, administrators can be flexible with hours

    Cons

Slow, slow, slow return on maintenance requests
No oversight of school administrators- it seems that school principals are out of touch with how management should be run
There is no emphasis or effort in enforcing a healthy work environment between co-workers.
No formal training of any kind for new hires (one hour of training does not equate to formal training)
Pay is very difficult to understand and pay stubs are even more confusing- little to no information on how to read a pay stub. Also, method of pay is quite confusing and seems to be a detriment to the worker.

    Advice to Management

Check in on your school sites! In order for a district to look good, schools need to be taken care of in order for them to function efficiently. Focus less on personality of administrators and more on actual skills and relationship management. It is imperative that, just as regular employees are evaluated, school principals are also evaluated on a standard that is not solely dictated by test scores. The schools rely heavily on the help of the district and need them to intervene when hard situations arise! Take care of your workers and inform them of their pay schedules and how to read pay stubs.

I have been working at Santa Monica Malibu School District full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Many great students
Generally supportive administration on site, but some turn over
    Many talented colleagues
    Warm, friendly atmosphere

    Cons

District can be out of touch with what is going on at school site
Some teachers set in their ways and not open to innovation
A fair amount of turn over of adminstration

    Advice to Management

Don't keep quitting after 1 year!

I have been working at Santa Monica Malibu School District full-time

    Pros

If you love education then you'll be able to get the job done.

    Cons

You wil not be able to figure out what you are being paid. Payroll seems to set traps to dock you pay. Administration more concerned about "liability" than education, seems to be little to no support for teachers.

    Advice to Management

Resign. Let someone who can do the job earn those six figures.
