    Pros

    Cons

So difficult to gain hours. No room for development or promotions because all the positions go to favorites or relatives.

    Pros

SMMUSD has a wonderful community of parents and students. The teachers all care about the education of their students. Each school has a diverse population.

    Cons

Depending on what school you teach at, parent involvement can significantly change. This is simply due to demographic reasons and financial capability.

    Advice to Management

Be on schedule with technology plans. Many schools are at a significant disadvantage with the technology resources at their disposal.

I worked at Santa Monica Malibu School District full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Teaching at SMASH has been one of the greatest experiences I've ever had. The community (both staff and families) are thoughtful, progressive people.

    --Amazing professional development opportunities

    --Students' interests valued

--Thoughtful inquiry based discussions of best practices

    --No fear of change!

    --Authentic at its core

    Cons

With teacher-created curriculum and authentic, narrative assessments, the time put in went well past school hours.

Hard to achieve a balance between home/work life.

Very committed people will be challenged to find this balance.

    Advice to Management

    Excellent, dedicated leadership. Kudos!

I have been working at Santa Monica Malibu School District full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The company pays decent and has great benefits. Gives you a sense of purpose. Special Education has good job security.

    Cons

inconsistent management who sometimes doesn't know what to do or how to handle certain situations. Doesn't consider suggestions from staff who are actually working with the children. High turn over in aide positions so they are mostly always understaffed. They want you to go above and beyond but it's not reciprocated.

    Advice to Management

Take and ask staff for suggestions to make things run more smoothly. They mostly know what's happening. If you want your staff to do more to help give your staff more support and recognition.

    Pros

Pay is pretty good for a part time job. You get health benefits if you work more than 4 hours a day. It's rewarding and challenging.

    Cons

It's only 9 months a year and you don't get unemployment in the summer. You love them but sometimes the kids have serious behavior problems and parents are not always sane.

    Advice to Management

I appreciate my job tremendously and at my school you are doing an excellent job!

I have been working at Santa Monica Malibu School District full-time

    Pros

Some students are deeply engaged. Some parents are deeply devoted to their child's education. It is a very safe area. There are a lot of different kinds of students from a wide variety of backgrounds.

    Cons

Administrative turnover is crazy. There have been 7 principals in the last two decades, not counting interim principals. There is little consistency between the houses. Custodial services leave a lot to be desired. Tehre are a lot of budgetary concerns and bureaucratic nonesense.
