‘We made a mistake hiring you’

In the Shard with good views
Cons
I joined Sapphire Systems in Sept 2019 as a Project Manager. It happened very quickly because I was immediately available and they had a shortage of PMs which was business critical, so I joined. My predecessor had not made his 3 month probation period. They gave me his phone, put me at his desk and told me I would job shadowing someone for a brief period of time. My impressions of the company were not negative, just that they do a lot of roll outs and each PM has around 15 projects. After a few days at the company, I wasn’t being invited to meetings and wasn’t really given anything to do. They spoke openly and in front of me that they were still interviewing Project Managers. On the Friday afternoon of my first week, someone tapped me on the shoulder and asked me to come to a meeting. HR were waiting for me in the meeting and told me they had made a mistake hiring me and that they had found someone else who was a better fit for the role. Me not understanding what was going on, then found myself a few minutes later being escorted out of the Shard. There was no proper explanation for such an abrupt dismissal. A lot of these small software specialist businesses do seem to let people go in a kind of you’re hired your fired mentality, not much regard to how that disrupts a persons life. Usually when there are a high turnover of Project Managers, that is usually a sign that something is not quite right at a more senior level and the PMs get the blame. I think another PM has left recently and they are currently advertising for a PM - possibly that persons role, even though that person is not in a role currently.
