    Pros

Great place to work, several jobs eliminated including mine. Ethical, professional as any company I have ever worked for.

    Cons

No Direction from Senior Management, never had my boss make one call in 4 years with me.

    Advice to Management

    None

I worked at Sara Lee Foodservice full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good work/family balance, good benefits. Expectations were high and employees are held accountable, but within reason.

    Cons

Strategic direction kept changing. Limited marketing resources were employed to help sales force. Change to distributor aligned sales force made no sense.

    Advice to Management

My advice would be to concentrate focus on core products and core competencies. My department was under-capitalized even though our segment produced the majority of the company's profit.

    Pros

Good hard working people, good quality products, decent brands. The "troops' are willing to work hard and do the right thing for the organization.

    Cons

Weak senior management and lack of strategy. Continue to lose large customers to other companies who listen to what customers want. Senior management does not have relationships with key customers. Employees spend more time dealing with internal issues than with customers. Decision makers are not in tune with what is happening in the marketplace.

    Advice to Management

Spend time understanding the marketplace & customers and then build a long-term strategy that you are willing to stick to. An organization cannot succeed with constant changes, re-organizations, and change in direction. Allocate resources and spend money growing the top-line. You cannot grow a business by just cutting cost and not willing to invest.

    Pros

Competitive pay & benefits. Consistent work during the recession.

    Cons

Dead end jobs. Unless you work at corp HQ you're aren't going anywhere with this company. Working anywhere but Corp. HQ makes you a 2nd class citizen.

    Advice to Management

Sell the business to somebody interested in managing and operating profitable businesses.

    Pros

freedom of imagination, good internal communications

    Cons

maybe not as aggressive as competitors in matters of test kitchen applications, R&D regarding shelf life/product stability, incisive consumer product and market research and analysis. Contract package designs are becoming less imaginative, the outsourcing is a liability, although if mgmt wants to separate these suppliers it's easier than letting individual go.

    Advice to Management

Rethink recent top down approach. More hiring must be done among outsiders in order to get away from the corporate culture that make so many stale thinkers. Competitors exist because they too have developed certain capabilities that work for them and might also work for SL.

"Sara Lee Foodservice: a once great company left to ruin"

    Pros

Sara Lee Foodservice provides a valuable service to distributors and national restaurants around the US. When foodservice receipts are strong, Sara Lee Foodservice posts respectable numbers and is a great place to work. Because of the frequent reorganizations, there are opportunities for growth that, in the case of some employees, is surprising and unexpected. Sara Lee as a company has tremendous resources and the benefits are good. Vacation time is fair and the health benefit is average to good. Quarterly town hall meetings are the vehicle which management uses to regularly communicate changes to line employees. It is one of the few times employees can directly ask management questions.

    Cons

Management is third rate and changes far too frequently to be effective. Hours are long and variable depending on your specific manager. Culture is weak at best and there's significant tension between groups. There is little collaboration between functions and groups and compromise is rare. Management seems to have a 'with me or against me' attitude toward employees and dissent. Recent changes have been short-term wins but long term deficits. Company seems to focus exclusively on short term, with little mind given toward increasing bench strength or training great rookies. A significant amount of favoritism seems to influence major decisionmaking.

    Advice to Management

Time to clean up your shop and build your bench strength.

    Pros

Location and Brand recognition along with Good benefits.

    Cons

Affirmative action is taking the company down a dangerous path.

    Advice to Management

appreciate the people you have no matter what sex or color they are. There is a penchant to promote diversity to the point of driving talent out the door. Also, unrealistic growth projections are hurting a valuable brand.

    Pros

    Great Brands
    Great Customers
    Consumers like products

    Cons

Way too many go to market changes and management changes create severe business disruption.

    Advice to Management

Setlle on who you are as company and drive continuity and competence with respect for your people, customers and consumers.

    Pros

There was opportunity for growth if you were willing to work hard.
The company offered great benefits and encouraged employees to volunteer in community and charity events.
    Co-workers were friendly
A business casual work environment, which I miss to so much because of the organization that I work for now isn't.
    I was able to telecommute.
At the time that I was there the brands and products lines were great, but Sara Lee has been doing a lot divesting of businesses.

    Cons

Long hours and constant change to the structure of the business.
Sometimes decisions were made based upon who you knew not necessarily the skill set or ability of the person.

    Advice to Management

Give a change in structure enough time to see if it can be successful before discarding it and moving to another change and then another and another and so forth.
