I have been working at Save the Children full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Family friendly policies and great mission helping children

    Cons

Sr Mgt doesn’t understand nuances of business and makes decisions w/o being informed. They have a lot of reorganizations which cause workplace chaos that goes on for months and a brain drain with talented staff leaving.

    Advice to Management

Promote from within and get rid of the new CMO. She is awful and doesn’t have a clue to the nuances of the business. She’s also a very negative person and is so uninspiring.

I worked at Save the Children full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great mission and impact on the lives of children

    Cons

Toxic culture, poor leadership, lack of focus, diversity and inability to make decisions. The work environment encourages employees to work in silos, is highly competitive, political and employees will do anything to get ahead. There is no courage or willingness to address bad behavior, bullying, exclusion and poor leadership.

    Advice to Management

Address bad behavior, toxic culture and weak leadership and measure activity throughout the agency having little to no impact. Focus more on "how" people are treated each day and less on the big celebrations.

I worked at Save the Children full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great mission shame about the leadership and favoritism

    Cons

Favorites and old guard can do no wrong but people who question strategy or direction ignored or quashed. Very passive aggressive, spend endless months on new initiatives that inevitably fail. No praise or advancement for those outside the favorites list.

    Advice to Management

Clean sweep of the old guard and have the board bring in new management team reporting directly to the chairman. No new initiatives. New accounting system that integrates all functionality procured off the shelf to replace abysmal in house builds

I have been working at Save the Children full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Great mission, great coworkers (in general)

    Cons

    - poor senior management -poor career advancement -little accountability

    Advice to Management

The mission is great, but there is little career advancement (having a course online does not equal staff development) and the senior management team (many of them older white men) is very isolated from staff.

I have been working at Save the Children full-time

    Pros

Save the Children has a great mission and offers strong programs throughout the world. I also like that they work in the US. There is a professional working environment and the management has people with a lot of experience.

    Cons

It seems like money coming in is the only thing that matters. They burn through senior positions very quickly and it causes a lot of instability and uncertainty for everyone else.

    Advice to Management

Work on treating people with dignity and not as a means to an end. Either hire your senior staff better or be more reasonable with your expectations.

I have been working at Save the Children full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great mission. Opportunity to grow. Ability to travel and see the world.Fantastic colleagues. Collegial, non political environment. Summer Fridays out at 2:00 every other week.

    Cons

Complex work with a lot to learn. Can be difficult to navigate the many priorities. Essential to have strong influencing skills.

    Advice to Management

CEO is amazing and values staff, always encouraging people to take vacation time because everyone works so hard on behalf of suffering children. Great motivator and demonstrates strong belief in our mission.

I worked at Save the Children for less than a year

    Pros

Everyone is very friendly; lots of interesting brown bag events for interns; well-established organization with great mission

    Cons

Intern program was disorganized, but it could have just been that way in my department because my immediate supervisor left in the middle of the summer. Many boring hours with nothing to do, even after requesting additional work.

I have been working at Save the Children full-time

    Pros

Growing fast, mostly nice people, great mission as nonprofit

    Cons

Leadership changed a lot during past years and create much instability; bureaucracy widely exists as a large organization; this organization intends to hire less people for more work so you work can either be overloaded or delayed.

    Advice to Management

Senior management team is far away from most of the employees.
