    Overworked, undervalued

    Jun 16, 2017 - Supervisor

    Pros

Fantastic team. Some good workers, hard, dedicated and easy to make friends with. Not colleagues, friends. Money isn't too bad for supervisors, above living wage. And all the ages does go up yearly with an end of the year bonus for management staff. - but you have to have almost 0 absences, meet most targets and have review reports to be good.

    Cons

Understaffed. High turnover of people due to understaff issues and being over worked. No appreciation for it Very much a case of 'thanks for helping me out' but YOU will never receive a favour nor should expect one. Managers allow other to do their job while they take it easy no matter how much the struggle is. But will give off if it isn't done. Managers regularly (and I do mean 4/5 days this will happen) leave early. By early I mean 2-3 hours before their shift is ended. Maximum weeks allowed off for holidays is 2 weeks ( with a bit of a fight) most are a week. Holidays not allowed November- beginning of February (even though contract says Nov -Dec) but management won't approve it. Area managers are very distant, only care about meeting unrealistic targets with next to nothing resources. Very much a 1 person, 4 jobs to do kind of place. These are just facts, but my opinion is; if you are breaking your back to make them money then yes, they will be nice. But that isn't the same as being appreciated and treated well. Managers DO take advantage of staff where they get it easy but instead of motivating, run with pressure and fear to get things done when work builds up, but won't help to relieve it. Personally, people were undertrained, thrown in deep end first and when sinking was left to sink.

    Friendly, Relaxed, Stressful.

Aug 6, 2019 - Assistant Manager in Bolton, England

    Pros

-> Very friendly teams -> Very relaxed environment -> Management are easy going and actually listen to their teams. -> Great support network. -> Easy access to lots of support, help and advice. -> All managers, area managers and head office have an open door policy, you're free to speak to any for advice given its appropriate.

    Cons

-> Extremely long hours during busy periods, stock takes, Christmas -> Being salaried means you can work 50-60 hours and only be paid for 39. -> Deliveries always have problems, usually leading to massive stressful weeks and area managers getting annoyed and expecting more and more out of you. -> Times of extreme stress and pressure.

Management roles are rewarding and offer excellent progression if you have the commitment

    Apr 18, 2021 - Store Manager

    Pros

Excellent career opportunities if you have the drive and commitment. Area managers have always been supportive towards me. Challenging work which requires dedication and passion, but very rewarding once you achieve your goals. My advice to new or newly promoted management; it's not easy, but stick with it, don't be afraid to ask for help and over time you will crack it! Decent salaries for store managers, especially for higher-taking shops. Good bonus scheme. Good recruitment process in place. Good training processes for new starters (even if I'm not 100% convinced that the online EDGE training is better than good old-fashioned pen and paper).

    Cons

If you don't have the commitment and passion for the job then a management role is not for you. Don't expect a 9-5 working pattern. Realistically for a store manager or ASM you're looking at a 45-48 hour week. Sometimes things go wrong and you will have to put in extra time. Fortunately, if you enjoy the work and are driven to succeed then that isn't necessarily too much of an issue. It needs to be said that a store manager role can be very challenging, especially to those who are new to the company or inexperienced. For those aspiring to be an SM, I would recommend applying for an ASM role first to learn the ropes and then progress when you feel ready.

    AVOID!!!

Aug 23, 2019 - Store Manager in Manchester, England

    Pros

The amazing sales assistants you get to work with

    Cons

Store managers and assistant store manager jobs advertised as 39hrs a week. Total rubbish!! You are allocated a total number of working hours a week to your store that has to be divided up between your sales assistants, but that number is usually so low that the only way to run your store is do 60+ yourself, on a permanent basis. If your lucky you might get enough time to eat lunch, but in over 3 years working for the company I never once had anywhere near a full lunch break. If you complain you are spoken down to and told you are not managing your time effectively, yet they cannot come up with a solution when you present them with evidence of rota's etc. You are encouraged to join the Job Center trainee scheme to get 'extra staff for free' which is NOT what the scheme was set up for. Daily bullying over the SAS (upselling at the till). Never any positive recognition. They mislead employees into leaving positive reviews on various websites to counteract all the bad reviews. Favouritsm and bullying is rife with many of the area managers, but I must point out that if you are lucky you will come across the exception to the rule, but as the area mangers change the areas they oversee every 6 months or so it never lasts long. This company have some amazing people working for them, but they are under-appreciated, demoralised, and generally treated pretty badly.

    Pros

Friendly staff, lovely customers, nothing else good that I can add to this section as there isn't any, if the top knobs and area managers treat managers and staff with respect and not like dirt then might be a different matter

    Cons

Other than what is mentioned above everything, from area managers to ceo and anyone else higher up, I would not and never will advise anyone to work for this company

    Cons

    - Ridiculous sales targets to be met. - Management were clueless - very rude management when I worked there who looked down their nose at most of the staff and didn't treat them well. - Area managers had no clue what they were doing. - Very old equipment - tills were very old and card machines crashed all the time. - Management continually messed up holiday requests.
