  4. "I still have nightmares about working at Shaefers."

    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee

I worked at Schaefer Ambulance Service

    Pros

Coworkers. Dispatch, EMTs, paramedics and field sups.

    Cons

Management. They nitpicked everything and micromanaged constantly... not to mention how uncaring and hateful they were. All they cared about was money and it was apparent with how they treated their employees. Racism showed its ugly head more than a few times to those close enough to hear conversations... They had a way of getting what they wanted and not taking, "no" for an answer. They'd promise to honor your days...

    Disapproves of CEO

I worked at Schaefer Ambulance Service full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Experience, co-workers, contact with other public agencies.

    Cons

Management, ownership, equipment and extremely low salary.

    Advice to Management

Don't give up on a legacy company. Treat employees like the original owner did. Don't treat it like it's the silver spoon in your mouth you were born/married into.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Schaefer Ambulance Service full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

I loved my co workers and made some of my best friend in dispatch

    Cons

Management unprofessional. Owners are absolutely a disgrace and will get rid of you just like cattle. They offered new employees the same pay as dispatcher that were working there for 3 years until we called them out. Absolutely disorganized and that’s why we lost the Los Angeles fire department contract. Watch the strike on YouTube for Schaefer’s el central division

    Advice to Management

You are running down a business that’s been here since 1932 and your greed , mismanagement and untrustworthy owners will make sure that Care ambulance service will stick around and put you out of business

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Schaefer Ambulance Service full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    Kind dispatch, flexibility with shifts

    Cons

They've lost every 911 contract they've ever owned due to poor operations, lack of resources, lack of cleanliness in ambulances, poor pay, no 24 hour shifts, poor record keeping, stations not up to code with cleanliness and health inspections.

    Advice to Management

Maybe if the owner put the money in his savings account into buying new rigs, remodeling stations to be up to city health ordinances for work space environments, and communicated more with his team members he wouldn't have lost all of the contracts he owned. There's a reason why you lost LA County contract, J-Dawg, and there's a reason all of your EMTs left to join the better ambulance company--because you're terrible...

    Neutral Outlook

I worked at Schaefer Ambulance Service full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Running 911 calls as an EMT, great experience to learn and use your EMT skills on a regular basis.

    Cons

Moral was very low overall when I worked there. Lack of trust and communication between management and employees. Lack of raises based on experience and expertise. Embedded employees that lack passion for their jobs and empathy for their patients.

    Advice to Management

Empower your employees, communicate goals, mission and expectations. A little positive reinforcement goes a long way. Teamwork makes the dream work.
