    Pros

the variety of challenging work not only provides meaningful purpose but also is motivation enough to look forward to coming into work

    Cons

the role of government support contractor is not for everyone. the govt employees tend to not be as welcoming as they could be to subcontractors. the idea of having nongovt people working similar positions is not looked upon highly by the worker bees.

I worked at Schafer Corp. full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Provides very good work-life balance. Education reimbursement is generous. PTO is generous for the industry. Most mid-level managers are hands-off and trust their employees to keep their government customers happy.

    Cons

Unstable outlook for the foreseeable future. CEO/HQ Mngmt have a poor comprehension of the AF/DoD space and directed energy business areas. Losing small business status in 2005/06 began the steady decline. Salaries for long-term employees are under industry average for the ABQ area.

    Advice to Management

Split the company up and sell them off into separate business units: DoD Space and Directed Energy, Homeland Security, etc. Return them to employee-owned businesses and watch the good reputation in DoD space and directed energy rise again.

    Pros

Good people, interesting mission, lots of fun at work.

    Cons

Professional development is not clearly defined and it is difficult to learn new skills or work your way into management.

    Advice to Management

Define a pathway for employees to work their way up. Have a professional development track. It's a competitive environment and employees will stay longer if they can estimate where they will be within the company in the future.

    Pros

Salary was competitive. Enjoyed the contract I was working on. My teammates at the time were smart, hard working and fun.

    Cons

Advancement can take some time. If you aren't a contractor making the company money, or part of the company core mission, jobs can fluctuate.

I worked at Schafer Corp. full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Working at Schafer is all about the co-workers and the great opportunities to really do something you can be proud of.

    Cons

Schafer's distributed (and diverse) operations mean that not one management size fits all. In my short stay we had a parade of CEOs, CFOs and managers - none of whom could satisfactorily overcome the lost their small business status and subsequently much of their Government business.

    Advice to Management

Sell the company to another small business or watch your company (and investment) wither away.

    Pros

The people and the work environment.

    Cons

    Advice to Management

Keep your employees up to date with the direction that the company is going as well as with the status of big contract awards.
