I have been working at Schenectady County Community College full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I was in a situation in which I had no real supervision and was able to do whatever I wanted in the classroom. In many ways, the School is so unorganized and chaotic, they really don't have the wherewithal to track faculty success.

    Cons

The facility needs improvement and the admin needs to stop treating students as children.

    Pros

    Students make this job worthwhile

    Cons

Academic Affairs does not provide a colleagial environment at the higher education level. Micro-managed in terms of reviewing your communication with colleagues as well as micro-managing your classroom and teaching pedagogy.

    Advice to Management

Acknowledge how this form of management impacts morale as well as teaching environment.

I have been working at Schenectady County Community College (More than a year)

    Pros

Benefits are good, all things considered

    Cons

The managers do not communicate with their employees so as a result, people do not know what they are supposed to do and what they are not. The other thing that I have been experiencing is although I get 4 weeks of vacation, when I go to use it, even when giving over a month of notice, it gets denied. There is a high level of conflict within the college and tensions between the IT departments. They used to have just one IT department but one group of people did not like the other group so they revolted and formed their own department. The salaries are awful as well and the department managers kiss the executive management's butt so nothing is ever done about all of the problems within. The enrollment of student's is dropping like a rock as well so they have been laying people off, much of it through attrition

    Advice to Management

    Start Over

I worked at Schenectady County Community College full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I took this job because I was moving to the region anyway, and had experience in the position being offered. Because the place is pretty much dysfunctional, if you have focus and can be assertive, you can get some new initiatives adopted. It is easy to be a relatively big fish in this small pond.

    Cons

There are a lot of longtime employees here who really do the minimum and nothing more. Also, the Board of Trustees wield way too much power and, often, act shady, hiring "friends and family," vs. the most qualified applicant. Even by community college standards, the level of student is often poor. They need a lot of help, and they are not getting it by the Academic division, which seems to be more about politics than success.

    Advice to Management

Get the Board of Trustees under control. Do things the RIGHT way, not the politically expedient way. Help all student success. Get rid of deadwood employees.

    Pros

The students and faculty are amazing - teaching-wise, it is a fabulous place to work.

    Cons

Administration fights faculty at every turn; salaries are an average of $15,000 below market average; faculty go many years between contract negotiations without cost of living increases; workload is ridiculous.

    Advice to Management

    Pay your employees.

I have been working at Schenectady County Community College part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

A very challenging work environment. Really gives you the opportunity to develop your own teaching style and experience with some great students.

    Cons

As an adjunct, there are no benefits. The salary is substandard and the faculty treat you like a substandard professor. There is also no real opportunity for career advancement.

    Advice to Management

The departments need to take more of an interest in the adjunct faculty, as they teach a large portion of the courses offered at SCCC. A substantial pay increase for the adjunct should also be exercised, to increase retention rates and general happiness.

I have been working at Schenectady County Community College full-time

    Pros

Ability to make a difference in your community and with those wishing to realize their potential. A diversified student population and solid connections with community partners. A hard working group of teachers, civil servants, professionals and administrators.

    Cons

Even thought the College is a significant revenue source for the county, the county doesn't reinvest those funds as much as other counties who support their community colleges, so students pay more and staff make less to compensate.

    Advice to Management

Help the county taxpayers understand the value of the College and why greater investment will bring greater revenues for all to share.

    Cons
